I got involved through buying shares in the company I worked for. They had sharesave & sharematch schemes and also gave us options many years ago.
Have a look at exchange traded funds (ETFs). Halifax charge £12 to buy & sell. The stamp duty (1/2% on buying shares) is incorporated into the bid offer spread.

ps the dbx trackers site gives info on the constituents of their funds
