Noble Alan is a useful hurdler/chaser. Finished strongly when third in a Chester handicap (11f) in June, but found less than looked likely over 2m at York last time. May do better back at this trip. Tartan Gigha resumed winning ways at Carlisle in June, and in cheekpieces (retained) would have finished closer had he not been hampered at Beverley last month. Not in same form at Haydock last time, though. Watts Up Son was enterprisingly ridden to get back to winning ways at Carlisle (9f) in June, and again seen to best effect when runner-up at Ayr last month. Turned in a shocker at Ripon last time, though. Kathleen Frances won 3 handicaps in 2010 and, though on a long losing run, this strong-travelling mare has done little wrong this term. Probably best...

The five-furlong handicap at Thirsk looks a very competitive affair. Timeform run the rule ove the field... Oldjoesaid got back to winning ways over this C&D in May, but below par since runner-up at Ayr in June and refitted blinkers need to perk him up (ran moderately only previous try). Magical Macey narrowly cashed in on reduced mark on AW debut at Wolverhampton (5f) in April. Mixed bag since, though better than bare result over 6f here last time and one to consider back over optimum trip. Red Cape belatedly got back to winning ways at Newcastle (5f) in July. Disappointing he was unable to build on that last time, though, and others more reliable these days. Walvis Bay has been a mixed bag since landing a gamble at Ripon (5f) a year ago. Looked...

Western Aristocrat (14:35) should get us off to a good start at Goodwood this afternoon. The Jeremy-Noseda trained colt has looked very progressive this year and caught the eye when finishing strongly in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last time. Western Aristocrat is now stepped up to a mile and the form of his last run was franked by Strong Suit in the Lennox earlier this week, so he rates a good bet at around 2.6 today. Next up is Federation (15:30), who has shown progressive form in her three starts to date and is fancied to belatedly lose her maiden tag at Thirsk this afternoon. The selection was denied by the narrowest of margins by Red Eyes in a much stronger event at Newmarket last time, whilst pulling 9 lengths clear of the eventual third, and a reproduction of...

The twenty-three-runner Coventry Stakes perhaps isn't the most obvious race to concentrate on with the idea of finding one of the day's best bets, but in Mezmaar (16:25) we have a colt potentially out of the top drawer and he can give the in-form Barry Hills a fourth success in the six-furlong Group 2. Backed into favouritism on his debut at Haydock Park last month, Mezmaar landed the gamble impressively, showing a good turn of foot and looking every inch a Group-race performer in the making. It remains to be seen whether the draw has a significant bearing on things today, but Mezmaar's pitch in stall 1 on the far rail could prove a big positive. First Bid (13:45) did the business for this column at Yarmouth last month, and given the manner of that victory, we see no reason...
