York is the venue for today's placepot...


14:00 - All the eggs in one basket here regards the draw, trusting that the stand side is the place to be in the hope and anticipation that Silaah (from 19) will blast off, and we're literally betting that one or two or maybe even three of Ancient Cross, Ginger Ted and Midnight Martini will arrive on the scene late; they've all done it at this track before.

14:30 - If you thought the first race was hard, get a load of this: essentially thirteen unknown quantities. East Meets West, the only one with a Timeform large 'P', is first on the list, and don't be fooled by the fact he's still a maiden, as he would have won a listed race last time by around 15 lengths (at a conservative estimate) with a clear run. Speed counts for a lot at York, even on the forecast good to soft ground, and therefore 6f maiden winners Balty Boys and Zumbi are especially interesting amongst the rest.

15:05 - He may prove vulnerable in the finish, as has been the case all along this season, but Seville can't be out of the first three in this, bringing classic form to the table. Outside of the placepotting box, the cute bet is to back Sea Moon now for the Leger.

15:40 - A lot rests on young Joseph O'Brien, who has been given a big responsibility here, but if he kicks at the right time, early in the straight, then it's going to be very hard for Midday to catch Await The Dawn, who's long since looked a Group 1 horse and now gets his chance to prove it.

16:15 - According to the statue books, it's still lawful to shoot a Scotsman in York with a bow and arrow. Hopefully, though, Mark Johnston will come out of cover for long enough to give instructions to SDS for Es Que Love, who could well outrun this lot if he really puts his mind to it. Backing him up, we'll take On The Hoof and Nearly A Gift, given that an Easterby seems to have won almost 90% of the races at York this year.

16:50 - Time to be brave and take on Eagles Peak, who has much more on his plate than the market suggests. The obvious ones to go with are Our Joe Mac and Barren Brook, both thriving and suited by conditions.
