people think women not getting the evening slot is to do with sexism. no its not. its because of matches like this where a player takes a beating and its all over in less than an hour. there would be plenty more womens matches in the evening slot here if women played bo5 like the men

yes it's online and I agree with your point about tuning in having been told on 5Live that the tennis "is on Live right now on 5live sports extra", only to tune in and hear the jingle yet again. this happened the other day at 2:30 p.m. so. I tuned in only to hear later that coverage wouldn't start until 4 O'clock.

Always wondered how different the accents become as you move across Russia and if they differ wildly, in England you only have to go to the next city and it's like a foreign language with how strong their dialects can be, and we're tiny country in comparison.

Sports feeds are a disgrace. No reason why they can't be within 1 second of real time like RUK horse racing tracks. I think TNT is about 20 seconds behind live, unfathomable.

I don't think we'll ever get back to actual live coverage like we had 50 years ago, sadly, but there's no need for the deliberate built-in delays on terrestrial telly. I suppose it's to allow a delay for bad language or other unscheduled rudeness. Still annoys me though. Grin

Massive hold that. 3-2* and the crowd going wild could have turned the match upside down for a while.
Report mesmerised June 4, 2026 3:08 PM BST
One of the reasons for intentional delays are things like inappropriate moments or pitch invasions, demonstrations etc, gives directors time to cut away, which is why in football you never see them any more and why women stopped stripping off to run across the pitch with some slogan sprayed across her, which is a great shame.

Remember reading this on courtsiding a few years ago

"The courtsiders always are a few seconds ahead of the scoreboard, they get privileged information," he said.

"If the ball goes high up and it is obvious it will land out of the limits of the courts, the point cannot be put on the scoreboard but the courtsider will send the result before it is made official."

To find those courtsiders, the FFT have several people walking through the stands to detect any suspicious activity.

"A courtsider does not watch the match the same way any other spectator does. They do not react to the points, and they often have a device they use to transmit the results," said Lhospitalier, who added some courtsiders also used wires connected to the inside of their shoes to avoid being detected.

"They tap with their left or right foot depending on who scores the point," he detailed.

Every year, Lhospitalier's team kick out about 30 courtsiders from Roland Garros
.

BLACK LIST

Lhospitalier declined to disclose how many people are hired to identify the courtsiders as he wants the number to stay confidential to avoid the illegal gamblers to adjust.

The FFT's work starts before the matches, however, with another team looking at online betting sites to 'check the odds' and detect anything suspicious.

"It helps us target some matches and put more resources on one specific court," said Lhospitalier, who is also helped by France's gaming police, the Tennis Integrity Unit and Macolin, a European platform fighting against manipulation of sports competitions.

"We also go through the deep (invisible) web to check the odds on the dark market," he said.

It's annoying because with streaming it can be done without delay, I remember I think it was 2006 Olympics which had minimal delays of TV's online platforms, but that did not last long and online viewing from tv companies has not been a good option since.

my favorite is when this courtsider sat with a laptop hidden under a blanket. Guards noticed something suspicious and accused him of being a perv who j e r k e d off while watching women's tennis. He accepted the fine for that as it was much smaller than he would have got for courtsiding.
Report TheCarambaExperience June 4, 2026 3:20 PM BST
According to legend, once at the Australian Open, a courtsider at a women’s match was tapping his phone underneath a towel in his lap. Security approached him with a more disturbing type of disdain than usual: Several spectators had suspected him of masturbating to the players on court.

“Enjoy getting your rocks off to women’s tennis, huh?” the security guard said. Somewhat bafflingly, the man thought it would be as bad to admit to courtsiding, so he accepted the charge, paid a $560 fine, and was given a 24-hour ban from the grounds. In the end, being an admitted public masturbator resulted in a far shorter ban than being an admitted courtsider, which would have kept him out for the rest of the tournament.

I once had a strange experience of watching an Arsenal match on Sky at home I think around 2004 as we were closing in on the league, we were attacking in the game but our next door neighbours, with all their windows wide open, made a sudden explosion of cheering noises ..as Arsenal scored, fk knows how they were getting faster pics but it ruined the moment even though we went aheadLaugh very strange to watch what you thought were live pics, but actually know a goal had already gone in and you're just waiting for it to happen, you end up passively cheering, as if you were watching MOTD already knowing the result.

It's the sort of completely random run to a semi that you would never even put counterfeit money in, like with Boisson last year, it does literally make no sense to go from that to beating top 20 calibre players match after match

Not sure what the solution should have been because the tour only resumed late July/early August. So no time to have it there as US Open took place in August and then RG booking the September/October slot made that slot also not possible. How late in the year can you even play on grass?

You'd could have got rid of qualification for a start but maybe even that wasn't needed, and just start with the main draw, it was possible to have kept the original slot and re-start the tour earlier than they did, lockdown ended in mid may, - other sports were being played after that, the Premier League restarted mid June, Wimbledon was due to start end of June.

Report TheCarambaExperience June 4, 2026 5:24 PM BST
With a domestic league it's a completely different set-up than a tour with international tennis players. It's not like AELTC can just override decisions on the tour resuming late July just so they could get their flagship tournament in. Plus it wouldn't be ideal to just have players start cold at Wimbledon after being off since March. Some warmups like they did at USO would be needed.
But like you say their insurance made it easy. Would be interesting to know how they would have handled it differently if not for that. Maybe consulted with other Slams and done USO in late August, Wimbledon in late September and RG in late October.

Whilst all that may be true, if they did not have any insurance for that slam, there's no way they would have allowed a big black hole in their finances, that would have cost them hundreds of millions, no business if they can help it would allow for that, they would have somehow got it on when it was scheduled even if it meant losing some big players who didn't want to come or whatever, but they just made no effort as they didn't need to.
