I think she would love to have her revenge on Coco going into Wimbledon. So motivation won't be an issue. That match might not happen though cause there are other good players in the field.

is it the same guy doing the Berlin interviews as the Stuttgart interviews?

500/1000 is the same in this sense imo. Like they wouldn't go all out as much as they would in a Slam. Be more likely to retire if slightly injured. The other player would be less nervous closing out a match in a 500/1000 than a Slam.

I agree with all that. I do think some 500s are better quality than others, and players are more inclined to say "screw this!" if it's poorly organised

I think you are being harsh on Berlin, but I don't watch The Vlog.

They did get a band to sing Happy Birthday for Bianca once. That takes some proper organising. Maybe not the best "reading of the room" doing so after she had just lost, but that's Germans for you.

Qinwen turned up but withdrew before playing.
Jasmine was a gentlewoman and got beaten up by Ons, hadn't adapted enough to the grass yet.
Mirra didn't seem particularly bothered when it started to go wrong and didn't fight/care to turn it back around.
Jess seemed to be carrying a slight niggle and she did fight but came up just short.

This quick turnaround from RG final to grass court matches can't be easy for Aryna & Coco, and if the tournament isn't exactly the best then they may be more accepting of a loss/less likely to fight like crazy to turn it around than they usually would. like I said, my theory will be tested out.

Happy as in "I get flowers as my present this year? That means you are not gonna sing after my match? Excited"?

It feels a bit like a script for a play about a tennis match that fell out of somebody's bag on a rainy night while they were running for a bus.

Her reward is IJBABP syndrome plus having to play a rested Paula tomorrow.

Good opportunity for Paula now so surely time to bin off the doubles.

you'd think it'd be in Ons's interest too, but both are probably too much social butterflies to do the smart thing.

last time they won in doubles but withdrew before the following round it didn't go down very well. they started to get a reputation for it. surprisingly this week they've won twice in doubles, both in straight sets. the next doubles match won't be played before both QFs have been done, but as you say if both are still in for the SFs you'd think it would be sensible if they withdrew

oh wait, not both in straight sets. but their match was still pretty short in round 1

Canadian tennis is in a sticky patch at the moment.

Felix, Diallo and Shap all losing today. Felix as the tacit face of Canadian mens tennis so brittle at the moment in any tussle.
Leylah (who was introduced before her second round match as 'most famous for losing to Emma Raducanu') an absolute shadow of the player that seemed to have the focus and iron determination for success of a slam winner. Stakusic unable to get through qualifiers.

Mboko's red hot year currently the only ray of light for Canada.
