I've decided to come up with a little competition where we try to pick the future stars of tennis. This one is for WTA, there is also another thread for ATP. Despite the wall of text it's pretty straightforward.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS (selection process):
* You get two picks per year and you can make these whenever you like in 2019. At the beginning of 2020 (we will go by UKT), you get another two picks (you can make these picks whenever you like during the year), another two for 2021 etc. After a few years you will have hopefully built up quite the stable.
* You can pick any player born 2002 or later with the exception of Coco Gauff since everyone has already predicted her to be the next big thing.
* You can make your two picks at the same time or one at a time.
* If another contestant has already picked a player, no-one else can pick this player.
* You can not change picks.
* You can not save picks to the next year.
* Born 2002 or later will always apply so if there's some late bloomer born in 2002 that is developing in x amount of years from now, you can still choose them at the time regardless of age.
There's no deadline for this, you can join in whenever you like.

BUT HOW DO WE GET POINTS?
Here's how the scoring works. Points will be awarded for ranking success and title success.
Ranking: If your player go on to become a top 20 player, you earn 1 point. If your player becomes a top 10 player, you earn another 1 pt (so 2 pts), if your player becomes top 5 you earn another 1 pt (so 3 pts) and if your player goes on to become world number one you earn another 1 pt (so 4 pts).
Titles: If your player wins a main draw tour title, you earn 1 pt.
If your player reaches a Grand Slam final, you earn 1.5 pts. If your player wins a Grand Slam, you earn another 1 pt (so 2.5 pts). If your player wins three or more Grand Slams, you earn another 1,5 points (so 4 pts).
This means the total number of points won for a pick can be 9 points, 4 from ranking success and 5 from title success. You can not get points for things that have already happened. (So let's say you pick some late bloomer who just won his/her first main tour title, you will not get a point for that, but will get points for whatever achievements your player accomplishes later).

I will try to keep the thread updated with picks and scores so it's easy to know which players have already been picked. First contestant to 15 points wins the competition.
Good luck. You can make pick(s) for 2019 now if you want or you can scout and wait til later. Just do them before the year is over. Make the picks in this thread. If you have questions, just ask here.

I have a query that is probably worth bringing up now.
It's to do with clarifying the 'can't get points for things that hvae already happened' rule.

Firstly, let say there is an unpicked player that meets criteria, is in form and has qualified for a big event.
The obvious example here is Séléna Janicijevic who has just gone through three decent players in qualies for the loss of one set.
Let's say she goes on a run, gets to Week 2 of the AO and then somebody flags her.

Can they get points from an event that is already underway when she is picked?
(This would give the picker a significant edge imo as there is a possible 3.5 points for winning a slam
and whereas for example when you picked Emma after Wimbledon she then had to win ten games to win a slam later that year, a player could potentially be picked with three or less matches left to play)

Secondly, lets say someone picks a player after they have done something that would have been awarded points.
can they then get points from the player doing the same thing again? eg Let's say you had picked Linda after she won the Chennai Open.
Would you still be able to get points from her doing that 'thing that's already happened' again, ie if she won another 250 or higher?

Just feel it's probably worth clarifying this one rule before one of these situations actually arise.
By and large the rules have been effective, clear and covered most bases so you structured this well.
You also set what seems like a sensible points target (although the way the womens' comp is going, one or more of us may have expired by the time the comp ends Grin )

NO, cause her winning a title has already happened.

I'm convinced there will be points distributed soon. With the likes of Zheng, Noskova and Kostyuk it's only a matter of time. Then there are some others looking to break through soon and with the older guard being phased out over the years and new players getting picked I every year I am not too worried about a stalemate here. Unlike with the maiden Slam winner comps ... Scared
Report SamuelMertensBertens January 15, 2023 1:02 PM GMT
If Zheng was a vulture she would have already won 250's but that is not her strategy.
Report SamuelMertensBertens January 15, 2023 1:06 PM GMT
There should be some Slam winners in our list above or have collectively done a really poor job.
Report Journeyman January 15, 2023 1:15 PM GMT
I do think most of these players will achieve their most meaningful successes between 21 and 27 years old anyway.
I wasn't at all bothered Noskova didn't win her 500 final because it's inevitable she'll picks up main tour titles and there's only  point for that anyway.
The ranking surge and the experience are much more important at this stage.

VJK has experienced so much..  a junior slam winning year, then a 'buzz' year, then a sort of consolidation year and now a new year and she's still only 17.
They're all still so young and the headline grabbing teenage slam finals don't come along very often.
Report Journeyman February 8, 2023 2:56 PM GMT
I officially give up Diane Parry.

This is simply a personal choice and nothing to do with the rules as set by Caramba.
I would just prefer to play with picks that have not yet played on the main tour.

Anyway, you can still pick her, but just not get any points for her first title since that has now already happened.

Report SamuelMertensBertens July 31, 2023 7:38 PM BST
Players born after a certain year will be. Free for all, sp no initial rights. So let's say Mirra has won her 2 first Slams and is cruising towards her 3rd it might be in your best interest to hold back on making your pick for this edition and keep that secret for yourself for vol 2. I will also most likely set a date for when vol 2 starts and not do like I did with this one where the first people who saw the thread had an advantage.

Gut instinct is you get half a point for Noskova should this happen, and then you get the other half point should she win a title later.

Both Edy and I could potentially end the week sitting in first place!

Edy's best result (a Kostyuk Queenwen final) is a guaranteed 4 points even before rankings enter the discussion.
I do need Noskova to produce the goods now. She just fell short in Adelaide 2023 and she absolutely mugged me in Prague. All would be forgiven if she can win the tournament which would guarantee me 3.5 points and top of the tree.

Queenwen into the top 10 so edy already in second place and two matches from outright 1st place.

Kostyuk should really have won in straight sets, maybe if she hadn't created bedlam in her press conference and on social media the day before? She's clearly got the physical tools to win a slam but a bit of discipline and management needed to take that next step.
As for Linda N, great tournament and announced herself with the Iga win but really didn't get a look in against Dayana. Hey edy you want to swap her for Renata, Bartunkova and a large tin of Celebrations?

3) Journeyman 3,5 pts (Leylah Fernandez 1 pt for winning WTA title, 1,5 pts for reaching Slam final, 1 pt for making top 20)
4) arrong 1 pt (Clara Tauson 1 pt for winning WTA title)
5) everybody else 0 pts.

With this point I will win even if Mirra flops and only wins 2 Slams and makes world no 1 in reasonable time.

Obviously it's within your original rules to do something like this but the contestants over the last four years have clearly been making picks based on skill and judgement. Picking an player already established on the tour on the basis that she is in a bleep bleep bleep WTA final is nothing to do with skill and judgement. It's some kind of fastest-finger-first thing. You nearly did this with Timofeeva last year but held back, possibly sensing there might be a reaction.

Rather than go on about it I'll just run a parallel alternative table, still first to 15, of players picked on the basis of predicting what they could achieve (rather than fastest-fingers-first when they get to a final etc).

Alternative table (Skill and judgement based picks only).
1) SamuelMertensBertens 6,5 pts (Emma Raducanu 2,5 pts for winning a Grand Slam, 1 pt for winning her first title, 1 pt for making top 20, 1 pt for making top 10, Linda Fruhvirtova 1 pt for winning WTA title)
2) edy 5.5 pts (Marta Kostyuk 1 pt for winning WTA title, Qinwen Zheng 1 pt for making top 20, 1 pt for winning her first title, 1 pt for making top 10, 1.5 pts for reaching Slam final)
3) Journeyman 3,5 pts (Leylah Fernandez 1 pt for winning WTA title, 1,5 pts for reaching Slam final, 1 pt for making top 20)
4) arrong 1 pt (Clara Tauson 1 pt for winning WTA title)
5) everybody else 0 pts.

Does SaMeBe get two more picks for that alternate table then this year? Sounds complicated.

I think it's perfectly fine. If he ends up beating us, which he won't, we'll just put a mahoosive asterisk next to his victory.

You can asterisk all you want, a win is a win! Happy
Me not going with Timofeeva had nothing to do with reactions, but I felt that Timofeeva had a high ceiling of 1 pt and was not worth to waste a pick on at the time (this might prove wrong, because she did well in Melbourne) whereas I think Diana could potentially gain more than that. Plus 1 pt can be important at this stage of the game. This competition is about getting to 15 pts. Which strategy to use to get there is up to each contestant.

Comp 2 needs to have a mechanism that lets you protect a number of existing flags.

SamuelMertensBertens • February 11, 2024 4:09 PM GMT
I have actually thought about this. There is a possiblity that there will be something like this, but no decision yet. If so it's likely to be very limited, details will be presented at some point, but for now all the information I can give is there MAY be some sort of (likely very limited) flag protection for future comps so this can be taken into account when placing picks for this current one.

This is quite funny. The Czechs add ova to foreign players and now one of their own got rid of its ova.

Linda N wins Monterrey so when she moves into the top 20 I'll be on 5.5, one behind edy and two behind Caramba's real total. Grin

Just noting this as we're all about to be somewhat distracted by the US Open.
