I wonder if there ever was a tournament where a player won the title after all his opponents either retired during a match or gave a w/o.
|
|
By:
my guess would be no

i.e., got a title without having to finish even one match

In the 1983 U.S. Open, 18-year-old Houstonian Barbie Bramblett faced Trinity College star Ann Hulbert in the second round of the qualifying event.
Bramblett lost the first set. And lost the first five games of the second set. And lost the first three points of the sixth game. In tennis talk, she was down 0-6, 0-5, Love-40. It is mathematically impossible to be farther down in a tennis match. One more point and the match would be over, 6-0, 6-0. That's called a double bagel, meaning you won zero games in both sets. It's OK to get double bageled at the Einstein Bros., not at the U.S. Open. "Obviously I thought the match was over, and I was so embarrassed," said Bramblett, who graduated from Duchesne Academy and now teaches tennis and painting at the Houston City Club. "So I started swinging out on the ball, and my game elevated miraculously. I mean it was a literal miracle. Every ball I hit skidded on the line. I couldn't believe what was happening." Bramblett fought off three match points and won the game. She was still down, 0-6, 1-5. She won the next game and the next game and the next game. And about an hour later … "I won the match!" The final score was 0-6, 7-5, 6-3. |
