The thing with a guy like Kyrgios it comes back to what I said years ago about Stephens now at the time, that surely the #1 thing any fan wants to see from their player is effort, Kyrgios put in very questionable effort a few times in recent history, and how can anyone really support that?

It just means they get a lot of crowd support in general, they will be popular players around the grounds but won't always translate to drawing a crowd in the first place.

It all stems anyway from people saying tennis is too sanitised, the players are too PR, there's not enough bad guy characters. But you can be a bad guy character without all this extra crap.
There is an ultimate reason why people don't want to be the bad guy character though, too much work, there's so many lines you have to be careful with, and you are constantly going to face the media barrage, hence why players will take the safe option. |
