I had three groups of markets open the whole day (footy, tennis, and cricket). Most of the time when BF experienced issues all three groups were in suspended mode, but ocasionally the footy and cricket markets (typically all of them within the group) went alive, albeit for minutes only. Tennis matches that went live never opened at BF during the outage, afaik.
I think the argument that tennis would attract considerably more liquidity today is questionable, there were no 'big' matches on.

KDK went live for 2 minutes.

I wasn't eyeballing the site all the time, I do admit that.

still more liquidity then those other sports I mentioned (not 100% about obscure soccerball)
no, pretty sure KDK was the only one.

Isn't it standard procedure to re-enable soccer first after a longer outage?

at the time site wasn't stable enough anyway, so it was probably a good thing tennis didn't opened as it could have ended in tears. Could have opened KDK match towards the end though when they turned Sarasota stuff in-play.

i'm just getting a bit nervous about the stability of this whole site.
next time we may be hit by stolen payment info or something similar and more worrisome.

almost ended in tears when Siggy saw KDK was in-play, rejoiced, lumped on Pfizenmaier and the market then being suspended 10 seconds later

You can't really fault a company if someone carries out a good DDOS attack against them

they didn't even mug that much apart from saying the stuff about scheduled work initially.

unless they then don't take measures to further reduce the risk of the same attack happening again

I don't know how hard it is to protect from DDoS but I'll trust hackeredy on this.

I'm concerned about BF being reactive and slow to respond.
And they don't seem to have proper contingecy plans for unexpected events.
Even their phone lines and web chat went down today, due to high level of customer communicaton.

oh yeah, them not shutting down the site was also muggery as it's against their outage policy.

I might be cutting them too much slack, but even how they handled it has improved over the years which probably says more about how bad it used to be.

It's not like they can say all that much in situations like this, other than what they communicated via twitter.

betfair is a pile of crap in comparison. those tennis and cricket events that remained suspended were all available to bet on over at the sportsbook

It hit rock bottom where about 3 years ago maybe Betfair was literally going down 3pm every Saturday.

while annoying, I see technical issues like these as part of the game and count on a few days per year being lost due to stuff like this, just like days will be lost due to wash-outs at tennis events a few days per year. Super annoying if you end up losing big over it though, rather than just having to deal with loss of income for a day. That doesn't mean Betfair should do everything they can to protect themselves, but hackers will likely find a way if they're determined.

I remember in the past there were instances when someone from BF tried to explain what had gone wrong and how they were going to make improvements/changes to avoid the same unpleasant scenario. This usually happened after a day or two. [not that this would prevent future failures]

What I'd like to know is how likely I'm going to waste my day here again in the future, or what has been done to prevent this situation.

so they were holding them in suspend to protect themselves incase they opened them, the big money hit the market, then there was another outage and they'd have alot of rich, angry punters on their hands
By:

When: 13 Apr 15 20:53
They didn't use to suspend them is why, or were slow too, and people would rinse up on the markets. This is why they do that now.

Dear @ATPWorldTour you are being absolutely idiotic about fans putting up gifs and vines. What a way to destroy fan involvement. Moronic

1. John Cena beat Barrett to retain the U.S. Title. Barrett got the early advantage as the fans chanted England. Eventually, Cena won with a second FU . Good match. Cena gave Barrett a lot, and Bad News even got to kick out of a Attitude Adjustment. The match was about ten minutes long.

Following the match, Lana walked onto stage and got a large pop. Rusev attacked Cena from behind. Lana announced that the match at Extreme Rules would be a Russian chain match...

2. Paige won a Divas Battle Royal to become No. 1 contender to the Divas Championship. The Bella Twins sat in on commentary. The participants were Emma, Rosa Mendez, Alicia Fox, Naomi, Summer Rae, Cameron, Natalya, and Paige, who got a huge pop. However, the crowd was silent throughout the majority of the match. It came down to Paige and Naomi, and Paige won.

Paige was interviewed mid ring by Byron Saxton. After a passionate hometown promo, Naomi attacked Paige...
