Rod Laver

Correct. The ranking clue was indeed sneaky, while he undoubtedly was the best player in the world at one point, that was before the ATP rankings started in 1973. Roger Federer cried after having won Australian Open 2006 with Rod Laver in attendance, and said that winning in front of Laver was a big reason why he got so overwhelmed. Don Budge and Rod Laver are the only ones to have won all four majors in one year, Laver did it twice. He lives in Carlsbad, the city Bojana Jovanovski had trouble getting to three years ago http://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/blog/busted_racquet/post/Tennis-player-flies-to-wrong-city-for-tournament?urn=ten-wp2401

Yes. Played backgammon back in Iran (he couldn't play tennis there), then lost all his money at a casino in France when he moved there. Reached doubles final at RG 1989. Final clue was: 1 p) This 58 year old is the most successful male player ever to come from Iran.
