How come bowling isn't a big sport in the UK?

Just hasn't caught on.

I think the lure of darts is 2 things. Firstly it's a sport a lot of people can associate with. A lot of people have played darts recreationally down the pub. Secondly it's run by promoters who have done a good job of promotion (unsurprisingly as that's their job).

I nearly wrote something the other day in a thread on TF to someone saying Germany would rather put on a tournament for overweight British darts players than a women's tennis tournament about how darts is promoted, and tennis is promoted poorly in comparison despite being a far stronger and bigger sport, but never wrote it.

It's hard to sell and package as a sport though. At least harder than darts is.

That's what I was thinking. It's popular at night clubs here, just like snooker and darts are at pubs here, so if those two sports have found a way to be popular on a competitive level in the UK I though bowling would have a good chance at that too.

Darts is one of those ultimate "working class" sports. Like it's obvious they targeted basically Premier League football fans as their target audience with all the gimmicks added on.

Of course you can not like this group of people (myself included in this), but there's no doubt that's a huge market of people. They do the same in boxing over here for PPV's (not surprising as Matchroom run both).

Bowling is nowhere near as popular here as it sounds in Sweden from that.

Have you ever noticed Aaron the huge difference between British darts crowds to German darts crowds (you probably don't watch enough darts to notice). It's a stark contrast, they are much more subdued, and into the darts rather than acting like louts than the UK crowds.

I've not seen German darts tourneys but the UK ones are horrific crowds

As a sport bowling has very low status here, like darts and snooker, but it's a popular social activity.

Darts and snooker also go back years here (like way back to the 70s) when they were mainstream and on BBC a lot which built their status as entrenched.

Darts dipped off massively in the late 80s, early 90s, before a resurgence since probably around 2000.
By:

Dipped off because it had a terrible image (drinking, smoking etc.), and it come hard for sports like that (think of stuff like the banning of tobacco advertising).
