Monfils might be a great athlete and fast but last night was a very clear demonstration of the physical work the top guys put in. Despite his age Federer looked like he could have gone another couple of hours whilst Monfils was like a boxer who had punched himself out.It certainly hasn't harmed Federer that he's continually been scheduled for the night session and thus avoided the most extreme conditions throughout the tournament. Monfils had to play Dimitrov when the heat and humidity was at its most extreme on Tuesday and that clearly is going to take a toll in the 2nd week of a slam.
it reflected mental effort more than physical one, no one in right mind should say monfils lacking of shape to play long matches when he is healthy for extended period as now.it wasnt the issue only expectations level and lack of experience going with it. monfils lost the plot with disappointment, couldnt regroup quick enough. physically he is beast and surely one of top guys also talent wise.unlucky with the way his career meandered around injuries which disturbed his cognition and experience-wise development at some point .federer is very demanding opponent to play against but the way monfils played this match by being very agressive in shorten than usuall rallies, till he have chances to close the match suggested his tank was still full enough to compete if only these two consecutive match points wouldnt drained him on mental side so badly.
not much to say if so experienced at this stage federer suffered similar mental scare against djokovic in 2010 usopen semi having 2 match points on return...lost 7-5 ,year later same happened but fed was serving for the match,2 mp. he faced djokovic ,monlfils faced federer here

I would love to see a Monfils-Cilic semi, a refreshing change to see a player outside the top 10 in a slam final.
haha even better prediction than maestro
no one predicted two sets tho hehe
