Purely going by the h2h this could be as one sided as the stats suggest, 12-0 Nadal, 26-0 in sets, having said that 3 of the last 4 sets were won on a tie breaker, it's still a terrible match up for Wawa as well as he's been playing the past 2 years not a player like Novak to hit quicker and acute angles to bother RN forehand it just feeds straight into it, on the upside for Wawa the the new plexicushion is not bringing out Nadal's best game with below par matches against both Dimi and Nishi, back Wawa to take a set for the first time if you're not trading. 3-1 Nadal.

those first 2 sets were as convincing as anyone could be against nadal

and of all people in the ATP, wawa arguably has the worst record against nadal at 12-0 and 26-0 in sets.

winning your first grandslam title in your first final attempt is not easy, i can understand and make room for his choking antics in the third set, anyone else except for fed/murray/novak would do the same. as much as I love Murray, I believe Wawa has made a bigger achievement than him in terms of making a statement in your first grandslam final. took Murray several before he could win it.
Report AZ91 January 26, 2014 11:54 AM GMT
let's not forget Ferrer and berdych, both consistent top 10 players have also had attempts at grandslam finals against nadal and have both lost, where as wawrinka, a recent entrant into the top 10 took his first opportunity against nadal in the final of this grandslam. what wawa has achieved is amazing.

more from him to come in the coming 2 seasons, a joy to watch in 2013 and a joy to watch in the coming years too

@bgtennisnation Nadal just revealed in the presser that he "felt his back go during warm-ups"...
Report AZ91 January 26, 2014 11:56 AM GMT
hmmm, in all honesty, i doubt nadals "injury". the only worry was his blister from earlier rounds. he's been solid all tourny and has taken the tournament by storm dropping only 1 set and even seeing off an excellent federer this tourny in straight sets, something he's never done in a grandslam, how come out of NOWHERE this back thing creeps in, coincidentally when  he's a set and a break down. I don't buy it, i just think he was taken by surprise at how good wawa can play and utilised tactics to drain him of his confidence
Report caramba January 26, 2014 11:58 AM GMT
Not very shrewd to tank the 2nd set to play mind games with Wawa imo. Obviously it bothered him, and got a little better once the pain killers kicked in.

i thinkk nadal thought it would throw him off instantly, he tried to stop the rot instantly, it just didn't work. i think wawa knew what he was attempting. kudos to him for remaining strong mentally

But it was good to see he was able to raise his standard a little. Would have been a shame for Wawa to win his first slam  6-3, 6-1 ret. or even 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.

i think had nadal been playing berdych or ferrer and the way he creeped back in the third set, i think he would have gone on to take the 4th and the final too, i think stan is mentally stronger than berdych and ferrer

Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam title with victory over an injury-hit Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final.
Wawrinka withstood a fightback from the world number one, who was struggling with a back problem, to come through 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Fortunes fluctuated wildly over the course of two hours and 21 minutes as Wawrinka opened in scintillating form before a tearful Nadal appeared close to quitting at two sets down, only to stage a remarkable recovery in the third.

"The last thing that I wanted to do was retire. No, I hate to do that, especially in a final," said Nadal, who revealed he felt the back issue in the warm-up.

You've obviously put your house on Rafa.  I am Nadal's biggest fan, but I fear his run against federer will come to an end.  I was always pro Rafa pre tourni (see my posts), however his chances are slim versus Federer.  I fear Federer will just aim towards his forehand side and exaberate the lister even deeper.
Nonetheless rafa may well win, but his hand injury will worsen vs Warinka making at LAY OF NADAL at 2.0 OUTRIGHT a perfect bet to a perfect Australian Open so far for me.

no need to feel embarrassed Mesmerized.  As to your nadal comment ... just follow me.
