I imagine that it increases betting on the exchange alright, keeps people talking and money moving in-play. But if they are planning to move towards a more traditional book-keeping method, which I imagine is more profitable than merely supplying exchange markets, it would also allow them to close the forum and save on overheads that it takes up, little as they may be. I really dont think it serves them a hugely as the % of people that post here would be dwarfed by the number using betfair who don't, nevermind the actual volume of money ratio.

There's not an entirely sound "business reason" for closing it but there definitely doesn't appear to be one for keeping it going either IMO. Betfair has based itself on it's marketability, it's done tremendously well on that and now it wishes to sit back and watch as clueless punters come running to give them their money. The "cash out" ad being a prime example. When it came out Everyone on here, including myself bemoaned the stupidity of the ad i.e. was a **** bet/cashed out late/mug money... etc. etc. however not sure about other buts when I pointed it out to my non-gambling mates they all thought it was a great ad because the fella won money.
