he will not retire in 2013 in my opinion
Report swebih June 2, 2013 7:02 PM BST
He should,no more slams for him.
Report caramba June 2, 2013 7:05 PM BST
Rafa will have no energy left after his 7 hr match with Novak on Friday, and Roger will lift his 2nd RG trophy on Sunday Silly
Report swebih June 2, 2013 7:21 PM BST
Will see.
Report edy June 2, 2013 7:33 PM BST
Caramba, you do realize that Novak plays Kohlschreiber, who has defeated the serb on these same grounds not too long ago, next?
Report edy June 2, 2013 7:34 PM BST
Not just defeated, he SMASHED him.

Federer is still cool btw. HTH
Report petr cech June 2, 2013 7:35 PM BST

Report judorick June 4, 2013 9:18 PM BST
you are a long time retired, he had weeks off this year with injury, will take 3 times as long just to get back, performance will riose again from September onwards

keep playing and earning, why not?
Report Has this ever happened before? June 4, 2013 9:21 PM BST
not much good playing well when the slams are done
Report judorick June 4, 2013 9:25 PM BST
how many weeks was he off? 6 or 8? multiply by 3 to see when he could expect to reach pre injury levels

called The Principle of Reversibility
Report Has this ever happened before? June 4, 2013 9:27 PM BST
what injury?

he's simply playing a reduced schedule so he's fresher and can spend more time with his kids
Report The Bhoys June 4, 2013 9:32 PM BST
i thaught berdy smashing him at us was a once off, but today just tells me he has to quit or hes guna lose his legacy.
Report judorick June 4, 2013 9:34 PM BST
his back definitely tightened up and he had to rest, that means he has not trained properly
Report Has this ever happened before? June 4, 2013 9:38 PM BST
all players have niggles

federer prob been the luckiest out there with injuries

his game has been falling apart for years
Report swebih June 4, 2013 9:39 PM BST
what injury are you talking about?
Report aaronh June 4, 2013 9:48 PM BST
mugs will be seething when he makes Wimby final next month

will lose to Muzz but still the GOAT
Report judorick June 4, 2013 10:23 PM BST
I'm no fan but there is no reason for him to retire just because he doesn't win as much as he used to

I'm certain that he is not operating at optimal levels physically and he probably needs several months niggle free to regain the energy and movement he had 12 months ago

speaking as a Physical Therapist on general principle that is of course, not having specific knowledge
Report swebih June 4, 2013 10:44 PM BST
I would retire on top. It will be interesting to see what more he can do?
Report judorick June 4, 2013 10:48 PM BST
it's too late to retire on top as he clearly isn't, if he was going to do that he should have stood on Centre Court last year and announced it, that would have been going out on top

probably see how he does at Wimbledon
Report swebih June 4, 2013 10:53 PM BST
Shocked  top is not only number 1 but top 10 I would say
Report Has this ever happened before? June 4, 2013 11:00 PM BST
tipsarevic was top 10 for ages and hardly at the top

just another also ran

for someone like fed, getting crushed by the rest of the top 6 is pointless
Report edy July 20, 2013 7:49 PM BST

Still a mug thread though. I will always love and respect you Roger Love

Memo from Fed to Wilson: please send my old racquets back to me
Report AyersRock July 25, 2013 4:49 PM BST
he wasn't hardly winning anything with his old racquet in a long time, 1 slam in about 14 attempts, and that was lucky
Report Biscuit1979 July 25, 2013 4:52 PM BST
True, but he's doing f*cking terribly with these new ones
Report Piet July 25, 2013 5:06 PM BST
The US Open should be his last tournament, when players like the last 2 weeks are not scared of him at all should be the sign for him to bow out.  Don't want to see him around trying to win the Hall of Fame championships in the next two years just to win another tournament.
Report swebih July 25, 2013 5:14 PM BST
yes USO should be just last try. I hope so.
Report sammybizzle July 25, 2013 5:18 PM BST
Fcuk the trophies and tournament wins.I now think he should retire sooner than later because of his back.

I really think that is the underlying factor here.It was at wimbeldon against Benneteu right? Not long ago at all.I think it's got worse, he hardly moved or tried today. In his home town?

Racquets is one thing but the back is the real issue imo.He should quit before a serious injury.
Report Darlo Bantam July 25, 2013 5:23 PM BST
I got the impression Fed was thinking about making it through to the next Olympics...
Report smb360 July 25, 2013 6:33 PM BST
Fed resorting to trying to vulture Newport would be a sad sight indeed.
Report DonNo1 July 25, 2013 7:13 PM BST
Given the decline of his serve and movement you have to feel like the back is giving up.  No reason to retire just yet but might be better off resting up before the USO instead of trying to get match practice in
Report aaronh July 25, 2013 9:15 PM BST
would love to see Fed at the Hall Of Fame Championships Love

...
Federer made it clear that he hasn't made any plans to finish his career. After all, he's already started making arrangements to compete in tournaments in 2014 such as the Brisbane International, which he'll be playing at for the first time in his career.
...
Report mafeking August 1, 2013 11:09 PM BST
he will and should carry on a bit longer but i'd surprised if he's still playing in 2015
Report HU SUPERSTAR August 7, 2013 10:14 AM BST
losses to bad guys means nothing. he will look ok at uso.go to semifinal i think. probably will be nice to see fed vs nadal first time at uso. will not retire in 2013
Report FATMax August 7, 2013 10:48 AM BST
retire fedex and stop throwing all these matches against mugs.
Report crazycrazytsonga August 7, 2013 11:57 AM BST
I don't think he's injured or there's a problem with his racquet. I think he's just more interested in the size of his bank account than tennis. Probably spends more time negotiating new sponsorships and checking on investments than training.
Report bb66 August 7, 2013 12:04 PM BST

Report Mcik August 15, 2013 8:17 PM BST
I would wait until US Open before judging him, he might not want to waste his energy in these mickey mouse tournaments. Presumably he has to make an appearance for his sponsors etc.
Report mouse trap August 15, 2013 8:20 PM BST
he's playing poorly, it's got nothing to do with energy preservation.   he even arrived to cinci one week earlier - skipping montreal - to train here with the goal of making a good result.  this is not a good confidence builder if we want to talk USO
Report AyersRock August 15, 2013 8:25 PM BST
Since when are masters events micky mouse? also he doesn;t want his ranking to continuous slip, he's defending 1000 points here
But here one minute to short than too long, the guy can't find his range
There is no way Federer stand a chance of winning the US open unless he gets lucky and doesn't face murray/djoker/nadal, i wouldn even fancy berdych and delpo to beat him
Report The Bhoys August 15, 2013 10:16 PM BST
if nadal wins tonight which is fully expected I think we could see 1 of feds worst results tomara, he will absoloutly batter fed,
Report brain dead jockeys August 16, 2013 12:09 AM BST

Report JonHig. August 16, 2013 3:12 AM BST
Yes he should retire imho.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? August 16, 2013 4:04 AM BST
I think many of his problems have come from taking too many breaks between tournaments. He lacks match prowess, seems to crumble under pressure and the way to regain that is simply to play more matches.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? August 19, 2013 12:00 PM BST
He has said that he is not bothered about the rankings, and is trying to stay in the top eight for after the US Open, but his game is more important and he is trying to get it back on track.

Jimmy Connors won 1249 matches.
