Coincidentally, I don't think they should, because I feel that thinking just gets in the way for them. Not because they're dumb, but simply once a player like that starts thinking, it messes everything from shot execution to footwork, up. Their minds and what their body and muscles have been trained to execute on auto-pilot through millions of repetitions will not be on the same page anymore and that's when it gets really ugly and messy for players like Li, Cirstea or Berdych (among many others, even someone who has often been praised for his thinking on the court like Federer).

I think that's a good observation edy. It's probably why we see so many silly missed smashes - when they're waiting for the ball to drop, the rhythm goes, thoughts enter the players' heads etc.

I don't know about tennis but when I play football it works like that for me. When I'm playing a match, the quality of everything I do is on average vastly better than it is when just casually kicking a ball around, and that's because instinct takes over.
