Nationality in Sport is often a matter of choice. If I had a French passport (which I would have, having been there for 35 years) then yeah, my nationality would be French.

My sister was born in australia and lives in australia, married an australian and has two kids who quite rightly consider themselves australian. But she is English. And knows it. Was brought up in England, cut her teeth inEngland, you dont forget that.

You are both right, Srichaphan from a technical perspective, Lordbobbin alludes to a more fluid, subjective form of national (individual) identity, influenced by environment.

I wasnt aware of nationality or blind patriotism until at least 8 years old. I was born in england and always lived here, no question where my allegiance lies. Patriotism is pretty much totally irrational imo, but I cant help the fact I love being English.

She seems to be a slow starter. Listening on the radio (a cr@p sport for radio imo, football passable, cricket brilliant but tennis is awful by ear). Is the whole game live, cricket on five live extra and now according to the tv guide some, presumably, godawful "weekend breakfast" show starting.

She does take her time. Never mind the Australian/English thing. She needs to get something changed over her sex so that she gets an extra set or two. Any chance she was born a boy??

If I was Robson I would milk the Aussie born/parents thing for all it was worth at this time of year.
Then for the other 11 months of the year she can revert to being a more sponsor friendly UK citizen again

2. She's done her homework here and understands what's working (or maybe that's carried through from Hobart)
may still lose, but i don't think the bias that's developed on stephens is i.

At eighteen years old she is surely going to improve by the month, she has real potential and power. Regardless of the resultof this match I hope she has the will and the hard work attitude.

She needs to work really hard on getting her ranking up so that she isn't having to face the likes of Kvitova, Clijsters and Li in the early rounds. An easier ride through would do her the world of good. She's done well again here though.

it's the case with all power players in the women's game that it comes down not to how good they are when they're playing at their top level, but how consistently they can maintain that level.
it's a bit of an unknown, but robson's consistency does seem to be improving. she's also got three slam winners scalps under her belt at 18, which confirms how good her top level is and that she's got a set of cojones. she's also showing real smarts here today too.
it's promising, but there are no guarantees she'll ever be spectacular.

Think the market just thinks Stephens has a bit more experience and smarts Razz. Laura's poor start has left her with a bit of a mountain to climb too, although she's doing very well.

Rob, watch out for Donna Vekic. Very young, but she has plenty of potential. And she's been training in England for some time, so the Wimbledon crowd will be sure to brand her an almost-Brit!

She left herself just a bit too much to do there. Tough to sustain it when you've had to fight your way back from four down. (Just ask Bartoli!!) Still very much in this though.

Surprising how often somebody fights their way back and then still ends up losing, just after they've got level. Seems to take it out of you. (You probably know this, having played tennis!)

Garcia needs grow some of the mentioned cojones, then she might just fulfill the potential your very own Andrew Murray has predicted for her on twitter during the RG match against Maria Sharapova.
As for now she has some of the worst brain freezes in winning positions you'll find.

haddock_pastie • January 19, 2013 12:06 AM GMT Unless she's been bummed senseless the last 24 hours, 3 hours on a tennis court is NOTHING. you guys need seriously re-condider the 'fitness' card. These are highly paid full time athletes. She is 18 ffs. Fitness is no issue, only claa, of which Robson is far superior to Stephens ( no disrespect - a fantstic player) but not in Robsons league when it comes to a real match.... English / Stamina haters.... Do One..Vamos (paella)
haddock_pastie • January 19, 2013 12:11 AM GMT oh and by the way... Robson was a similar price v Petra, and we all know what happened there...MUGS...today is a much easier match up for Laura...It can only be the same mugs,,,,,hope you have lots of funds in reserve you clueless tennis wasters
Don't think we'll be seeing him again

about 2% can speak real english on here, so withe the anti-english mentality (f off you haters) Robson is massively underrated on this peasantry forum. Robson still hugemongous value in a match where the odds should be 50-50. PS. F Off her racist English hater gyppos

Lol a bit stronger than I'd have put it but I agree with the setimenet.
Looking at this thread and the match thread for the Kvitova match some people need to wise up to how good she is at the moment and will be or there'll be some seriously burnt fingers in the coming months.
That said I think the 3 hours she spent on court the other night tips the balance to Stephens in this one.
