Can't have Robson on my mind. Kvitova handed her that win the other day and yet Robson still did her best to lose it.
Stephens a huge bet for me

Difference is between nationality and national identity.
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 6:45 AM GMT
Nationality in Sport is often a matter of choice. If I had a French passport (which I would have, having been there for 35 years) then yeah, my nationality would be French.

My sister was born in australia and lives in australia, married an australian and has two kids who quite rightly consider themselves australian.  But she is English.  And knows it.  Was brought up in England, cut her teeth inEngland, you dont forget that.

Were you?
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 6:52 AM GMT
Your childhood is very important to establishing nationality.  Many of my strongest memories come from the years between 5 and 15.

Report Areyoutalkintome? January 19, 2013 6:53 AM GMT
You are both right, Srichaphan from a technical perspective, Lordbobbin alludes to a more fluid, subjective form of national (individual) identity, influenced by environment.
Report Areyoutalkintome? January 19, 2013 6:54 AM GMT
And yes, this is over...
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 6:55 AM GMT
Point taken. I'm sitting down to watch this tennis match.  Well, what's left of it!!
Report rob_dylan January 19, 2013 6:55 AM GMT
I wasnt aware of nationality or blind patriotism until at least 8 years old.  I was born in england and always lived here, no question where my allegiance lies.  Patriotism is pretty much totally irrational imo, but I cant help the fact I love being English.
Report rob_dylan January 19, 2013 6:55 AM GMT
Robson struggling by all accounts.

Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 6:59 AM GMT
Now get that serve crashing in.
Report GreenFortune January 19, 2013 7:01 AM GMT
FFS! Laura thrown in the towel mentally. Couldn't resist a patriotic bet on Robson, wish i hadn't now!
Report rob_dylan January 19, 2013 7:01 AM GMT
She seems to be a slow starter.  Listening on the radio (a cr@p sport for radio imo, football passable, cricket brilliant but tennis is awful by ear). Is the whole game live, cricket on five live extra and now according to the tv guide some, presumably, godawful "weekend breakfast" show starting.
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:02 AM GMT
She did just impressively win the last game Green. Not exactly throwing in the towel mentally.  Not yet, in any case.
Report Areyoutalkintome? January 19, 2013 7:02 AM GMT
Medical timeout for Robson.
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:03 AM GMT
She does take her time. Never mind the Australian/English thing.  She needs to get something changed over her sex so that she gets an extra set or two.   Any chance she was born a boy??
Report mecca January 19, 2013 7:04 AM GMT

Report northanlite January 19, 2013 7:06 AM GMT
If I was Robson I would milk the Aussie born/parents thing for all it was worth at this time of year.

Then for the other 11 months of the year she can revert to being a more sponsor friendly UK citizen again
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:07 AM GMT
Oops. Sorry Laura. Should never have doubted you!
Report Areyoutalkintome? January 19, 2013 7:08 AM GMT
Robson really needs to work on the serve (unless of course it is all in the head)... she has all the attribute for it to be a weapon.
Report rob_dylan January 19, 2013 7:09 AM GMT
I ask again, can this be listened to live on radio?
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:10 AM GMT

Stephens cannot deal with the brutality of Robson's shots.
Report DStyle January 19, 2013 7:17 AM GMT
it's not the brutality that's the problem. it's the mix of spins that's working for her so well.
Report DStyle January 19, 2013 7:17 AM GMT

Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:18 AM GMT

Report DStyle January 19, 2013 7:21 AM GMT
1. I don't think she's injured

2. She's done her homework here and understands what's working (or maybe that's carried through from Hobart)

Ot a tennis scholar here, are breaks not as crucial in the womens game or is it just Robson games?
Report rob_dylan January 19, 2013 7:28 AM GMT
Ot=not
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:29 AM GMT
She needs to work really hard on getting her ranking up so that she isn't having to face the likes of Kvitova, Clijsters and Li in the early rounds. An easier ride through would do her the world of good.  She's done well again here though.
Report rob_dylan January 19, 2013 7:29 AM GMT
Anyone else listening on the radio? Surely the worst sport to listen to on the radio.
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:29 AM GMT
Breaks don't mean anything like as much in the women's game Rob
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:30 AM GMT
Don't you find their descriptions rather poetic, Rob??? Laugh
Report DStyle January 19, 2013 7:31 AM GMT
it's the case with all power players in the women's game that it comes down not to how good they are when they're playing at their top level, but how consistently they can maintain that level.

it's a bit of an unknown, but robson's consistency does seem to be improving. she's also got three slam winners scalps under her belt at 18, which confirms how good her top level is and that she's got a set of cojones. she's also showing real smarts here today too.

it's promising, but there are no guarantees she'll ever be spectacular.
Report LordBobbin January 19, 2013 7:32 AM GMT
Stephens is 10 months older too. At this age, that can make a lot of difference.

She left herself just a bit too much to do there.  Tough to sustain it when you've had to fight your way back from four down. (Just ask Bartoli!!)    Still very much in this though.
Report rob_dylan January 19, 2013 7:44 AM GMT
That is disappointing having won 4 games in a row from 4-0 down.

Lol a bit stronger than I'd have put it but I agree with the setimenet.

Looking at this thread and the match thread for the Kvitova match some people need to wise up to how good she is at the moment and will be or there'll be some seriously burnt fingers in the coming months.

That said I think the 3 hours she spent on court the other night tips the balance to Stephens in this one.
