Yes it would have been a joke if the Tomic wins the TB and the match is now even, but that's the frustrating thing about this scoring system sometimes.

Tomic played the best set of Tennis I've ever seen him play. But Federer is just too good.

OK, so now he has played 18 sets against top ten players at ATP level the last 12 months and still won none, but at least, somehow, he made it to another TB.

the second set contained some great winners from tomic, enough to get through federer time and time again. he also defended break points superbly.
BUT he made almost as many unforced errors as winners and he had to play twice as many service points as federer. he won a total of six points on fed's serve in the entire set. there was lots that looked very good, but the fact was he was never ever close to being competitive in that set. i like tomic, he's improved a lot in two years, and i like his arrogance - and that is what it is right now - but in a few years time it will be justified self belief. it's tough to overstate just quite how much of an exception nadal was, when he first arrived, with strength way beyond his years, and a style which was to be the worst possible match up imaginable for the incumbent number 1 on clay. murray and djokovic have proved to be the much more relevant and likely modern paradigm: you may have a lot of talent as a teenager but you need to work really really facking hard and have big balls and develop bucket loads of determination, concentration and stamina if you want to beat the best in a slam. and that's why tomic is still at least a couple of year's away. |

it's also worth thinking about quite how hard nadal had to work to win a major other than RG.

Not sure how it's going to play out for Tomic, if he knuckles down the next few years and works hard on his weaknesses, he might be a contender.
But I always get the feeling his attention span is limited, lets see his results for the rest of this year. It's no good only playing well in Australia, he has to back it up everywhere. I hope we have another Rafter on our hands, but I'm afraid he could turn out to be more of a Philipousis  |

I would'nt like to compare him to either of those guys, but of course if you are going to adopt someone else's attitude, then Rafter is not a bad choice. He will have to work closely with Rafter in the next weeks for the DC, maybe he will learn something.

tomic stating that he is surprised how hard work and giving an effort on training brought him to success in sydney just says it all what he was doing last 2 years,he obviously thought he will roll on talent only and success is own to him. that is the difference between him and murray novak nadal potty, they had similar early start of career but after that worked socks off and quickly established themselves on the top,all of them are training junkies. tomic was in top 30 already and he managed to drop out. it just says it all about his attitude and work rate.hope now he realize that the road to success is not to be given to anyone on the . he maybe lost already as attitude to work is something you born with

It took Fed at his best to beat him. Fed played insane tennis. Tomic played brilliantly as well. To say Tomic wasn't even close to being competitive in the 2nd set is ridiculous. Even Fed said he brought the best out of me.
Tomic was a breath away from taking the 2nd set....different ball game if that happens, not saying Tomic would have won if that happened as Fed would have beaten anyone last night, just closer match then. Rafter sacked him from the next Round of Davis Cup for tanking last year. Tomic said he'd decided to opt out of the next 2 rounds anyway so he could concentrate on retrieving his ranking and would speak with Rafter after the next 2 rounds in Sept. The last thing Tomic needs is to play Davis Cup this year. It is his re-establishing year and he needs to get his work load sorted without DC, so he can sort his schedule and retrieve his ranking whilst he has few points to defend. |
