Just now, in the new year.

I think they introduced it for him especially... Wink

Rafa is well over the 20 seconds by now. It's been six months.
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 3:25 AM GMT
when he comebacks the rule will be scraped

Report blackat January 4, 2013 4:27 AM GMT
Yeah, he'll threaten not to play at all.
Report wooky January 4, 2013 4:28 AM GMT
will it be enforced properly though...and against the big dogs like sharapova? They should put a big shot clock at either end of the court so the players and crowd can see how long they have.
Report The Bhoys January 4, 2013 4:29 AM GMT
no chance it will be inforced. not on rafa n masha nehow.

maybe if they stopped towelling themselves down after every point they would have enough time to serve
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 4:36 AM GMT
these are PET towels obviously, no chance they put them aside

maybe that's why he pulled out of Abu Dhabi and onwards, would love to see how he copes with it, but I fear I never will. Tbh, he will have big probs to hang on a whole match with his exhaustive style, but it's got be punished like that
Report StevoDevo January 4, 2013 12:00 PM GMT
Rafa plays to Rafa time and NOBODY elses.

Re: look up Malisse's rant vs Isner in last years US Open. Funny stuff. Everybody knows it and the umpires will do nothing about it.

Just like every match," Malisse said. "We get 20 seconds. Nadal gets 45 seconds."
Report bb66 January 4, 2013 12:03 PM GMT
I think pressure from TV comms and also opponents will be too big to ignore on top guns, they will .have to adjust. Would love to have an opponent in Big Mac style pointing it outLaugh
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 12:21 PM GMT
this rule is made not to use it strictly, only to avoid situation ifvthere would be no rule at all and player would prologue match deliberately. people who call for executing it are idiots theres how players can recover in long match without taking a breather,or concentrate in noisy arena without it. it would affect standard of tennis only to benefit hit and hope mugs. anyways matches are long not because if couple of seconds only because scoring is as it is. and u can sustain level without time to recover during long matches
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 12:22 PM GMT
can't
Report DStyle January 4, 2013 12:23 PM GMT
you cannot implement this without making allowances for the length of the previous point.

flagrant facking about between points is unacceptable, but you should not be penalising a longer break after long points.
Report bb66 January 4, 2013 12:24 PM GMT
Nadull benefits by taking 50" after every point, the rule has to be executed on him as well!!!
Report bb66 January 4, 2013 12:26 PM GMT
a player should benefit if he manages to win points fast, I remember the Wimbers final Fed vs ARod which showed how you can pull through games!
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 12:39 PM GMT
sory but i never noticed this untill someone started to talk constantly about it i like tennis like it is. besiedes as a trader isnt tahat better to have bit more time between points?
Report bb66 January 4, 2013 12:47 PM GMT
it's not only towelling, it is Nadull's cleaning the lines, Shazza's pulling her hair stain and Djoker's bouncing the ball as well, how could you not notice it compared to Fed, ARod, Clijsters or earlier Hingis?
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 12:59 PM GMT
i dont care what they do beetwen the points, for me there is no difference between few seconds here or there. tenis isn time framed sport, who cares.

i knowwhat they do but it make no difference to me.everyone is different
Report ThreeFlangedJavis January 4, 2013 1:37 PM GMT
Tennis is a sport and fitness is part of the game. The player who arrives for the match better conditioned deserves his advantage and the umpires are letting Djoko and Nadal's opponents down by ignoring time violations.
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 2:10 PM GMT
u saying that their less fit than other players.... hmmmm
Report bb66 January 4, 2013 2:13 PM GMT
Nadull is probably not fit enough for pulling through his playing style with enforced time constraints, he would have to adjust going for the points earlier, thereby maybe making more UEs
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 2:18 PM GMT
tennis is a sport where you should play better tennis than opponent then win.its not track and field sport. everything is balanced to the extend that players can show their skills during whole match and thats the border line.lwts addup pushups between pounts we will see whos rhe best tenis player

"lets addup pushups between pounts we will see whos rhe best tenis player"

You completely miss the point.  With your logic we should play one point per day after a one hour warmup so each player is in absolute peak condition for the point played.

Nadul may be as good as he is because he recharges so much between points.  If he didn't then he may be more vulnerable.  Enforcement of this rule will let us find out if this is the case or not.
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 2:38 PM GMT
well its u missing the point, im not here who wants changes .im ok with how it was for years in tennis. its enough of endurance sport atm why add more strains on players.ridiculous
Report StevoDevo January 4, 2013 2:40 PM GMT
Would matches such as last years Aus Open final between Nadal & Djoker have been as epic with this rule strictly enforced?

Surely we don't want to detract from the quality of tennis?
Report Java January 4, 2013 2:40 PM GMT
You've made it very clear you are happy for one player (Nadal) to be allowed more time to recuperate than another (Malisse).  This gives Nadal an advantage.  If you don't agree with the time being enforced then this is what you are saying.
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 2:41 PM GMT
im sure it would affect most players more than nadal in terms of durability. and he would be better of if it would have impact ob players. but thats not the point who is better off. point is to have playera fully fit and have them playing their best

About time, nadal and djoker have been abusing this for years

it's a very weak argument to say that the tennis quality will be reduced, it's an obvious nonsense. Nadal takes as much time as he can because of the way he played, he needed as much rest as he can get as somebody has already said.

I'm just playing devil's advocate. Not sure what the solution is. Clearly some player's take too long at times, Nadal being amongst the offenders.

I just don't want an epic battle ruined in the 5th set because players are getting the hurry up. Maybe you should get more time if it goes the distance..
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 2:52 PM GMT
its clear that its mallice who want to gain advantage by forcing rule which doesnt go with the nature of this sport. nobody stopping him to take more time like95 % of players does who arent ADHD disordered, to " recharge"
Report Java January 4, 2013 2:53 PM GMT
"ut thats not the point who is better off. point is to have playera fully fit and have them playing their best "

No - the point is that it is a level playing field for everyone. Make it 60 seconds if you want I don't care.  But don't have a situation where Nadal gets twice as long as other players as happens at the moment.
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 2:53 PM GMT
why nadal needs more rest, ffs doesnt he  play the same lengh of pointvas opponent? lol

thats bulshjt its rathwr nadal who is dominant isnt he
Report StevoDevo January 4, 2013 2:54 PM GMT
I don't think it's always a rest issue in regards to Rafa- it's more of a psychological ploy that he uses, you play when I'm ready.

Djoker uses it more to compose himself, they both use it to their advantage in different ways, but it's certainly not ALWAYS a fitness thing with these two, they are two of the fittest on tour!
Report Java January 4, 2013 2:55 PM GMT
"nobody stopping him to take more time"

Err - the umpire stopped him having more time.
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 2:58 PM GMT
everone abusing this stupid rule because its out of sense. whats the difference if nadal abusing it longer.abuse is abuse. its ridiculous rule and its initial sence is taken out of contekst because few players serves qiucker than others and trying to gain advantage

"errrr nadal being stopped  as well"

Malisse obviously feels that Nadal gets 45 secs when he gets 25 secs?  So if players think this because umpires are weak to the big names, then put a rule in which is fair to everyone.  Make it 45 seconds if it makes it more palatable to you Nadal fanboys.
Report Java January 4, 2013 3:02 PM GMT
Anyhow - doubt Nadal will come back, but would be good to stop Djokovic bouncing the ball 10 times each point.
Report AyersRock January 4, 2013 3:03 PM GMT
as java has said, give everyone the exact amount of time, be it 20 seconds, 30 or whatever but allow no advantage to anyone end of story no need  to cry its that simple.
Report StevoDevo January 4, 2013 3:06 PM GMT
It is pure gamesmanship by the top guys that do it. Why wouldn't they if the umpire doesn't pick them up on it?

Is it fair that the top guys can do it and get away with it and lower ranked players can't? Prob not.
Report StevoDevo January 4, 2013 3:09 PM GMT
No need to be a Nadal hater Java.

Rafa most certainly WILL be back at some stage. And look out once he regains match fitness!
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 3:37 PM GMT
exactly why not take average of 100 players add 5 seconds and then make rule? only using average time of federer .because tv is pushing for it and trnnis fans shouldn't fall into it. no changes is the best way.

on thevother hand why not tell federer to wait 25 seconds before he serve so his opponent can get composure back?

lol the one who has ball should dictate  and thats it

btw im old man notva fanboy, dont know even why its going on around nadal somehow, only because of haters i think
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 3:40 PM GMT

this rule can only be fair if there is a time clock.

without time clock players won't be aware when they cross their time limit.
Report bb66 January 4, 2013 4:09 PM GMT
there was no change of the rule, only it is now more strictly enforced! rule is rule and has to be enforced, otherwise it's useless and should be skipped. I'm happy if it is enforced.
Report AyersRock January 4, 2013 4:18 PM GMT
lol nadal fanboys very upset clearly, well done atp
Report DonNo1 January 4, 2013 5:01 PM GMT
Time clock is a ridiculous idea, it's irritating when commentators suggest it likes it's the perfect solution.  Allowances have to be made..for longer points, longer crowd cheering, player slipping over etc.  Just leave it to the discretion of the umpire, it's clear when someone is abusing the rule and deliberately taking longer (like Nadal every match).

Regardless nobody has had a point penalty yet have they?  Nobody will, not in a big match or an important stage anyway and we'll gradually shift back to where we were last season in all likelihood

Report wasu January 4, 2013 6:44 PM GMT
the time warning rule has to be more specific.

because of the current discretion of the umpire arbitrariness
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 6:46 PM GMT
yeah that was crazy, its just causing chaos instead of bringing more order, regardless of the opinion about the matter, i just cant imagine how it will can be fairly enforced without clock, and with clock every abuse would have to be explained by upire as i cant imagine situations where it can not be bended wide longer points.

its just ridiculous situation and should be leaved as it is because clearly it cant be solved without causing many stupid situation and confusion.its not that important  after all ffs

it's obvious Nadull has stressed the the rule violations far too much and he is the reason to enforce it more strictly. For Djoker bouncing the ball is a method of concentrating, and he has shortened the procedure over the years, while Nadull extended it more and more.

There may be exemptions on rare occasions (e.g. standing ovations, changing racket), but as a whole it should be enforced, and you get a warning 1st, so you know when to obey the rule strictly.
Report ;[p January 4, 2013 7:22 PM GMT
bbb666 time wise it takes twice more time to argue about penalty or warning to player and umpire that actually play the point. thANKFULLY ITS JUST A trial period for this rule being enforced harder so far doesnt look as it will last long

it's ridiculous how you argue against a rule being enforced, this mentality is the same that makes our society drown in corruption! Laws are laws and rules are rules, they have to be enforced! Once players know the rule is enforced they will obey it and there will be no reason for discussing it at length.
