She couldn't tank vs Nicole Gibbs because that would be too obvious.
Here are the reasons why Kvitova will tank.....
1. Kvitova has played too many matches lately, she desperately needs a rest before the US Open.
2. She has picked up plenty of points, and a title, in the last few weeks....she doesn't need this title and she pronbably wouldn't beat Wozniacki here anyway...Woz owns this title.
3. Safarova is a friend and they play together for the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup.
4. Safarova has had a poor summer and needs the points and money from this tournament in case she flops in the US Open.
5. Safarova is a good enough player that if she beats a tanking Kvitova nobody would bat an eyelid.
6. Safarova can be had at nice odds. I'm sure Kvit is clean but maybe those around her will be piling on Saf...get in before they do and the price drops.

I'll stay away, can't rule out Kvitova not giving 100% today.
Yeah and anyway Saf is a leftie. Kerber is a leftie and she beat Kvit in the Montreal semi-final last week. Lefties with big forehands like Saf can put pressure on Kvit's weaker backhand. I don't think Petra needs to tank for Lucie to beat her. Kvit would need to be about 1.7 to be any value methinks.

Yeah, just like Kerber. I meant to say Saf's favourite shot is the big leftie forehand down the line...and that would go to Kvit's weaker backhand.
If she has any sense she will avoid crosscourt forehand rallies with Kvit, her forehand is even bigger.

Hard to tell what is value and what isn't. Petra will surely not underestimate her good friend so she could easily win in straight sets, it's possible. But at the same time she can be 'soft' on Safarova, so she could even lose 
They know each other's game pretty well but have never met in a competitive match on tour, which is quite unbelievable.

it's very rare for petra to tank; in fact it's quite difficult for her to do so with her game because if she's loose she can just as easily tear someone apart.
