Levine was appalling. Even worse than Donald Young.

yes mouse trap, they're not playing, sorry. That is due to them not playing enough Fed and Davis Cup (e.g Kevin Anderson is in the middle of becoming US American too btw)

You have to be available for a minimum number of Fed Cup and Davis Cup ties to play at the olympic games.

That's why Serena and Venus started playing again, it's also why Dolgopolov won't be seen at the olympics, as well as Marion Bartoli, the two mentioned south africans and Pervak.

"A player is eligible to compete in the Olympic Tennis Event provided they are in good standing with their National Association and the ITF, and have made themselves available for selection to represent their country in Davis Cup or Fed Cup for two of the following years - 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 - provided one of those years is 2011 or 2012."

From the ITF's website

I.e you don't have to play or be nominated. You just have to make yourself available.

So Larcher de Brito that represents her country  in Fed Cup every single year is "unlucky to be European"???

yes, there is a shitload of much better and higher ranked europeans in the draw. Whereas Ons Jabeur gets to be the only female player representing Africa/the arabian world, Duque Marino South America, Cepede Royg for the Americas and Vogt as the representative for small states (she was quite successful at the 2011 summer games of european small states)

Told you, at the olympic games it's important to bring people from all over the world together. Remember the african swimmer almost drowned once? Or all the hopeless caucasian europeans who, if it was only about results, could easily all be replaced by far better black sprinters? The jamaican bobsled team at the winter olympics?

Playing the devil's advocate, who would you pick between these two?  Stephanie Vogt or Mandy Minella.  Both meet the criteria, both are from small European states....

I understand what you are saying but then why there are 10 Russians or 12 Spanish players coming to the Games if there is such shortage of spots and we want to see every possible flag flying above the courts?

I'd have chosen Minella, but I think that the mentioned 2011 Games of Small States in Europe played a big role in giving away the spot to Vogt. Minella did not compete in them while Vogt won 3 gold medals.

As for the other point, that's a difficult one. People and sponsors still want the stars to be there and if said stars are from russia or france, then that's simply that. Still, for the spirit of the olympic games they made sure to invite players from as many different parts (not countries!) of the the world as possible. To stay with Larcher de Brito, she is unlucky to be from europe and the iberian peninsula as that part of the world already has to many much better players representing it.

There's also a limit of players per compitition in place to make it somewhat more varied. Otherwise e.g Spain would have eight players in men's singles alone.
