I kept myself together pretty well during the ceremony, I didn’t want to act like a child Laugh. But once I arrived in the locker room , I sat down, and naturally, after losing the final of the tournament that thrills me the most, against the number one player, and having had lots of opportunities, I started to cry – out of disappointment, sadness. It was the only match where I cried afterwards last year, and one of the few where I’ve done it in my entire life. It was a very even match. I spent 20 or 25 minutes totally crushed. Once people started to arrive, I sat in a bathtub. They were coming to encourage me. I would thank them and ask them to leave me alone. I don’t like to be seen crying.

A quote from Rafa about the Wimbledon 07 final. He knows. Cool

I think that was a disgusting OP! Tennis is his life. He tried his hardest throughout the game - unfortunately it wasn't good enough, he was up against probably the best ever player there has been.

I have cried before, I'm sure you have too, OP.

Imagine if that was you, a nation's expectations on your shoulders. I'd find it hard to hold together too.
Report johnnyrant July 8, 2012 6:55 PM BST
This forum should make people weep for this type of thread. You not seen Fed blub when he got beaten by Nadal?

This is how the 'great' Fed handles Slam final defeat:

Report steve bywaters July 8, 2012 7:01 PM BST
I cant stand Federer but you can always rely on Murray to make him look good.
All that happened today was Murray was to scared shitless to hit a winner, to gutless to take chance, and paid the price. No amount of crying will change that fact
Report Shaky July 8, 2012 7:02 PM BST
ah, too scared to beat the greatest player ever. of course. so you admit, if he wasnt scared, he would be the best player in the world?
Report Eeternaloptimist July 8, 2012 7:04 PM BST
Exactly. First set Murray made Federer look like an ageing former champ whose time had gone but he tightened up because he doesn't have the cojones when it comes to winning Majors. No wonder he was crying. He realised that even at 25 his chance has come and gone because he doesn't have the top few inches which make the difference between a very good and a great player.
Report steve bywaters July 8, 2012 7:05 PM BST
today Murray had to beat the most talented player out there. Himself
Report HansUlrichApfelStrudel July 8, 2012 7:05 PM BST
In the first set Federer made 16 unforced errors. Do you understand the word unforced? Nothing to do with opponent.

Murray served poorly throughout which was why he didn't win.
Report steve bywaters July 8, 2012 7:13 PM BST
Federer was never the problem, he was there for the taking.50 unforced errors and he still won? Murrays total lack of self belief is the problem and is not being addressed.
Hes always ridiculed it but the psychiatric aspect should now be considered
Report matte July 8, 2012 7:14 PM BST
He obviously doesn't realise that keeping a stiff upper lip is meant to be the British way, not blubbering in public like a child.

Wonder what the op's live is like in comparison Wink
Report cricnut July 8, 2012 7:35 PM BST
Matte, we haven't got a reputation. The trouble is that unlike older days, there were usually a couple of great players at the same time and occasionly there wasn't even 1 great player. Murray is always having 3 of the highest quality players in the game, that will beat him, in the majors and it is rare for all of them to be knocked out, by the time the semi's come round. He gave it everything he'd got, played some fantastic tennis and got beat. He care's and is desperate to win one and obviously, Wimbledon is the one he really wants to win.

Good speech I thought. Nice to see he isn't always the man of granite he often comes across as being. And he is desperately unlucky to be born in this particular era.

He knows his career may well end up with 'plucky failure' stamped across it, when, in fact, he's just unfortunate in having not one but three truly outstanding tennis players up against him.  That'd be enough to make me cry!

Thought it was touching really, nice to see he cares about the sport, as opposed to all the sporting mercenaries nowadays.

What price was it for Fed to cry if he lost? Must have been 1-5.
Report Brokelad July 9, 2012 7:23 AM BST
I genuinely think the guy is just quite shy when talking in public. He wasn't crying when he lost or after he done his speech, just when he had to answer Sue's dumb questions in front of millions. I think that is most of the reason he comes across as not the most likeable bloke too cos he just isn't comfortable enough talking on tv to be himself.

Maybe I am making excuses cos I think crying when you lose is pretty bad form too but thats what it looks like to me.
