Unbelievable performance from the fella.  No element of fluke in it at all.  Thoroughly deserved it and played some incredible tennis.  Can't believe he didn't twitch once in serving it out!  Quite remarkable!

I'd say Becker winning it first time out was the biggest upset. A sustained performance like that over two weeks as a 17-year-old qualifier ranks higher than a one-off that Rosol pulled off today.

I think the volumes traded and lost on Nadal vs Soderling were bigger because of the clay factor.

Becker had just won Queens. Hardly a shock on this scale.

If we saw as much tennis then as we did today Becker wouldnt have seemed as big an upset

He actually did quite well at Wimbledon the year before, reaching the 3rd round and only lost because of injury to Scanlon, who was highly ranked

He then reached the quarters of the Australian Open (on grass then), and of course won Queens

becker was only about 16/1. he'd won queens the week before. probably 4th or 5th favourite

iirc he only just missed a seeding too. ranked in the top 20 i think which for a 17 year old was obviously phenomenal

Saw Beckers first ever match at Wimbledon on an outside court where he won 6-0 6-0 6-4, and couldnt believe close up how hard he was hitting the ball

Always remember two teenage girls walking up to the court, looked at the names on the scoreboard and said 'oh Becker v Willenborg, never heard of them, boring' and walked off

Bastl was a memorable upset, but Sampras wasn't the same player he was (admittedly still very good though).  He had slipped down the rankings and retired a few months later.
