This is MILES bigger than Becker-Doohan.
Becker wasn't a 1.02 shot in that one. Nadal has just come off a great winning streak. |
By:
biggest ive seen
hewitt karlo was big i guess, considering no.1 seed/defending champ in 1st round vs a qualifier |
By:
Unbelievable performance from the fella. No element of fluke in it at all. Thoroughly deserved it and played some incredible tennis. Can't believe he didn't twitch once in serving it out! Quite remarkable!
By:
PS Rafa WILL moan about the roof.
By:
Incredible hitting and serving by Rossol
Where has he been??? |
By:
Pissing about on clay courts
By:
Test his p!ss imo
By:
Hewitt went 1.01 during the match against Karlo, but it was known Karlo was a dangerous floater in the draw that year.
By:
And I think Doohan was a proven okish grass courter
This is only Rosols second ever grass court tournament and he only get in as a lucky loser |
By:
Correct. This is bigger.
By:
Probably, this is the first time hes qualified for wimbledon and hes not some young up and comer, older than nadal.
By:
Didn't even properly qualify
![]() No way can there be a bigger upset than this |
By:
goran ivanisevic after losing to agassi in the mens final the year before,
lost to nick brown in 4 sets. brown had taken a 5 year break from the game and was ranked 591 |
By:
Ivanisevic wasn't an 11 time GS winner
By:
the post said upsets, that was an upset
By:
And a very good one too. Well remembered that man.
By:
only because i backed the fecker
![]() |
By:
must be comfortably the biggest in BF grand slam history. 80ish today. probably nadal has the 2 biggest SP losses. 44 against soderling
By:
I will throw in a 5 set match in Davis Cup but also on grass
Corretja beating Sampras, when the grass was grass and Corretja never came to Wimbledon? |
By:
TT |
By:
I'd say Becker winning it first time out was the biggest upset. A sustained performance like that over two weeks as a 17-year-old qualifier ranks higher than a one-off that Rosol pulled off today.
By:
I think the volumes traded and lost on Nadal vs Soderling were bigger because of the clay factor.
By:
Becker had just won Queens. Hardly a shock on this scale.
By:
If we saw as much tennis then as we did today Becker wouldnt have seemed as big an upset
He actually did quite well at Wimbledon the year before, reaching the 3rd round and only lost because of injury to Scanlon, who was highly ranked He then reached the quarters of the Australian Open (on grass then), and of course won Queens |
By:
becker was only about 16/1. he'd won queens the week before. probably 4th or 5th favourite
By:
iirc he only just missed a seeding too. ranked in the top 20 i think which for a 17 year old was obviously phenomenal
By:
Saw Beckers first ever match at Wimbledon on an outside court where he won 6-0 6-0 6-4, and couldnt believe close up how hard he was hitting the ball
Always remember two teenage girls walking up to the court, looked at the names on the scoreboard and said 'oh Becker v Willenborg, never heard of them, boring' and walked off ![]() Bet they didnt say that from the next year onwards |
By:
I still maintain to perform day in day out for two weeks as a 17-year-old (perhaps I underrated his reputation up to that point) is still better than Rosol today.
By:
In 2002, world number 145 George Bastl beat seven-time Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras in five sets after receiving a wildcard into the draw.
THink this counts as a major upset |
By:
Bastl was a memorable upset, but Sampras wasn't the same player he was (admittedly still very good though). He had slipped down the rankings and retired a few months later.
