World Cup year.  England wilt in the heat?   Plucky jocks?  Draper?  F1?  Sunderland win champions league or would that be 2027?

How far does Fery need to go...
Report GeorgeBrush July 9, 2026 1:59 PM BST
Semi and another goal might be enough for kane

Fery available as a lay spoty and back Wimbledon at 3x the price. He's also French lol
Report KIMBLE July 9, 2026 4:02 PM BST
Could win spoty without winning wimbledon though, plucky loser etc. Depends on world cup obviously.

Report GeorgeBrush July 12, 2026 1:47 AM BST
It's a fair call, but unlike that french gimp kane or belly to win even after a sf defeat is possible

Win the semi and one is nailed on

Would certainly narrow the field.

Different rules but Bobby moore won in 66.
Report timbuctooth July 13, 2026 2:23 AM BST
Kinda surprised that they're only 64% now, not too drastic a shortening, was expecting worse. Whether a decent (but losing) semi performance from either of the two market leaders would be enough, who knows, but even if they win the whole thing with, for example, one winning the Golden Boot, the other scoring the last-minute winner in the final,  there's always the prospect of both of them being listed, splitting the vote, letting Rory or A.N.Other sneak through. A bit optimistic, perhaps, but I'm assuming my book won't be looking too good for a while, necessitating five months of damage-limitation-trading ahead for me.
Report GeorgeBrush July 13, 2026 12:37 PM BST
The list is so thin
Rory would need an open win to compete, keely a world record

If they make the final it's all over though, they are favs to beat the argies now
Report GeorgeBrush July 13, 2026 12:38 PM BST
I'd hope belly wins. He's been a 9 for the tournament, kane only 7 or 8

Report timbuctooth July 15, 2026 11:45 PM BST
As you've said, getting to the semi might be enough and the market's certainly not writing them off, so not over yet.
Anyway, new max red is Matt Weston; 8.0? WTF is that all about???
Report timbuctooth July 15, 2026 11:53 PM BST
Messi 8/13, Mbappe 13/8; just one assist behind but with Messi facing the mighty Spain while Mbappe faces a demoralised England, he's certinly the value call

just had a few small tenners so farCrazy

I (and the market) thought Bellingham was a non runner after he slapped that argie, but he's just scored again like a boss in the WC 3rd place play off, In from 24's to...

Belly has certain weaknesses though - plays abroad for a start, and is a bit more on the 'masculine/footy' side for the lady voters to bother with in this. Kerr far more acceptable for those ladies IMO.

Can't ever agree that a Scot won't form some kind of Jock vote support - no matter what kind he is.

One's a national hero and household name and the other made 4th story on bbc sport website
Report stu July 20, 2026 6:20 PM BST
If it was a true old-school SPOTY vote, where the actual nation (and males mostly) still voted, then I'd agree with some of that logic.

But IMO it will be more about a (at least partly) block Scot vote, and a lack of any real turnout from the footy fans for SPOTY by the time it happens. They don't turn up like they used to do for this kind of event. Plus it's worst time to back Belly now, he's today's buzz, but didn't actually win anything, played well is all. Playing well a criteria to win SPOTY? Not at a short price IMO.

By November I think the world record holder over a blue ribband athletic event can get it done, with the help of some Scot block voting.

Voting numbers are pathetic these days, which is why they hide them - and most footy fans, even if they like Belly now, will not be bothered to get involved in a TV woke show of voting. They will be out getting p'ssed and chanting about Reform support instead. Mischief

"more on the 'masculine/footy side' for lady voters" - Jude is the most popular man in the world amongst the ladies right now. Some watched England games just for him Laugh

Report Lifter July 22, 2026 8:37 AM BST
But yeah, doesn't mean they vote for him. Insanely popular though
Report stu July 22, 2026 12:29 PM BST
He has a chance for sure in this, just not so sure how good that chance is, compared to a world record holder and world championship winner this year.

He just hasn't won anything, and I'm struggling to think of many that won this event that didn't win anything. Giggs would be closest example potentially, but that was an extreme outlier, not a short price selection.

He might not even get listed, as they don't have to - though I think it's likely he would get listed. The two girls from England split their vote despite winning also. If Kane is on the list (likely too) then he's dead as a selection IMO.

Will be some interesting test case potentially in this vote and year - a traditional male sport and fans selection vs a Scot holding a shiny new world record in a more female friendly sport of athletics.

We had similar in Littler v Keely, and the former won it of course. But, Littler was less generally popular perhaps than Belly. On other hand, he had achieved and won more than Belly.

Some interesting tests to come in this.

Still seems odd for Kane to be rated the best world player really, given he ultimately failed (due to high standards of course) at the world cup. Didn't even get a game in the last one, when Belly of course did and scored. Club level he was good of course, but surely the world cup represents world football most. Quite obviously, Auntie hates horse racing, but Billy is odds on to be champion @20, abundant charisma, on a peoples' horse that might well go to the Breeders' Cup, and the field in this so far is tish. There would definitely be support from the industry, meaning the shortlisting is less likely, but it would be interesting to see the market price him up.

Report stu August 2, 2026 11:29 AM BST
Couldn't have even been called a win for the gold - it was a massacre.

In a weak year he's got what he needs for Scots to push him to win SPOTY here - the beeb even owe him it, after snubbing his previous world championship title year. He's also one of few who actually won anything this year. Doesn't need another world record, he has one already this year.
Report KIMBLE August 2, 2026 12:56 PM BST
Yeah but if they strike now and go for the 1500, this is a slam dunk barring something coming out of nowhere

Can't see another in the top 20 even having a chance to do anything
Report stu August 2, 2026 1:55 PM BST
His biggest dangers are both the England footie players, and if they'd won the WC, or even finaled, I probably wouldn't be backing Kerr. But they have the weaknesses of not winning enough, and being in a clear split vote situation likely. With some Scot vote practically a guarantee for Kerr, + plenty general athletics fans who will recognise his wins and record all achieved this year, I think he's already close to a slam dunk personally.
