World Cup year.  England wilt in the heat?   Plucky jocks?  Draper?  F1?  Sunderland win champions league or would that be 2027?

Yes, it's a long time but England would need to win the World Cup or Lando Norris the Formula One title. There's no women's football this year or women's rugby to get in the way. If Rory wins the Masters again he'd be in with a shout. Struggling to see any other possibles.

Hmmm, not following the Olympics, not knowing he had prospects of a second gold, I might have been a bit premature... Still, awful long way to go, plenty of time for him to drift, for the usual suspects to do their thing, or other unheralded runners to achieve something unexpected

Keely Hodgkinson has broken the long-standing women's indoor 800m world record, set by Slovenia's Jolanda Ceplak on the day the Briton was born almost 24 years ago.

Olympic champion Hodgkinson crossed the line in one minute 54.87 seconds in Lievin, France, taking almost one second off Ceplak's time of 1:55.82 which had endured since 3 March 2002.

Bruce Mouat and his rink have guaranteed Team GB's fourth medal of these Winter Olympics after seeing off unbeaten Switzerland 8-5 to reach the men's curling final in Cortina.

The British quartet - who are the reigning world champions - will face Canada in Saturday's final (18:05 GMT), looking to upgrade the silver medal they won four years ago in Beijing.

But that is the least these four Scots will achieve in these Games in Italy.

Mouat, Grant Hardie, Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie came here top of the world rankings and targeting nothing other than what the emotional skip called "our gold medal" in the immediate aftermath.

And for all they struggled in the round robin and only earned their place in the medal-matches thanks to Italy losing on Thursday morning, they now stand one step away from achieving that ambition.

"It will be the biggest match of our lives and we're so excited to get that opportunity again," vice-skip Grant Hardie told BBC Sport.

Probably better off laying weston than backing everyone else lol
Report stu February 25, 2026 12:34 PM GMT
Weston is an odd case for SPOTY - in terms of just this year he's a massive lay - yeh he won a gold, but in a sport that is minority in the extreme. Fanbase size?

But there's something of a lifetime achievement aspect to it - he's the most decorated winter olympic athlete for UK of all time.

What does that make odds around 7/1 - back or lay? I'm hedging to a small back at this price, as there's some margin for error, and might not be much strength if the footy guys mess it up. Keeley is a dark horse, but she has no Olympic win or outdoor world title to hit this year.

Beau Greaves is through to the quarter-finals in Milton Keynes, impressing once again with a 6-4 victory over Czechia's Karel Sedlacek!

Beau Greaves is through to her first ever Players Championship final, as Beau and Arrow beats Gary Anderson 7-1, winning seven consecutive legs, and averaging over 105 in the process!

Beau Greaves becomes the first women EVER to win a Players Championship title, as she beats Michael Smith in an excellent last-leg decider with a stunning 142 checkout to win it!

Beating three former world champions, hitting a 170 checkout in the final and pinning a 142 in the deciding leg while her opponent was sat on D10. And all that while becoming the first woman to win the title

There are few better ways to win a title than how Beau Greaves just has

Kinda surprised that they're only 64% now, not too drastic a shortening, was expecting worse. Whether a decent (but losing) semi performance from either of the two market leaders would be enough, who knows, but even if they win the whole thing with, for example, one winning the Golden Boot, the other scoring the last-minute winner in the final,  there's always the prospect of both of them being listed, splitting the vote, letting Rory or A.N.Other sneak through. A bit optimistic, perhaps, but I'm assuming my book won't be looking too good for a while, necessitating five months of damage-limitation-trading ahead for me.

Belly has certain weaknesses though - plays abroad for a start, and is a bit more on the 'masculine/footy' side for the lady voters to bother with in this. Kerr far more acceptable for those ladies IMO.

Report stu July 20, 2026 6:20 PM BST
If it was a true old-school SPOTY vote, where the actual nation (and males mostly) still voted, then I'd agree with some of that logic.

But IMO it will be more about a (at least partly) block Scot vote, and a lack of any real turnout from the footy fans for SPOTY by the time it happens. They don't turn up like they used to do for this kind of event. Plus it's worst time to back Belly now, he's today's buzz, but didn't actually win anything, played well is all. Playing well a criteria to win SPOTY? Not at a short price IMO.

By November I think the world record holder over a blue ribband athletic event can get it done, with the help of some Scot block voting.

Voting numbers are pathetic these days, which is why they hide them - and most footy fans, even if they like Belly now, will not be bothered to get involved in a TV woke show of voting. They will be out getting p'ssed and chanting about Reform support instead. Mischief

He has a chance for sure in this, just not so sure how good that chance is, compared to a world record holder and world championship winner this year.

He just hasn't won anything, and I'm struggling to think of many that won this event that didn't win anything. Giggs would be closest example potentially, but that was an extreme outlier, not a short price selection.

He might not even get listed, as they don't have to - though I think it's likely he would get listed. The two girls from England split their vote despite winning also. If Kane is on the list (likely too) then he's dead as a selection IMO.
