I'm 5 years away from ESC but seem to remember this happening. After singing, the countries priced between about 10 - 30 drift out. Their performance was no worse than usual but their backers thought they would be better and the dream dies.

100%. Though sometimes one will tumble in, and France has the potential for that.

There are murmurs that ESC Stefan Raab legend of legends will be back involved to do a more Melodifestivalen-style selection process for Germany. The last time he made a concerted effort to save Germany's honour he discovered Lena.

So watch out for Germany next year.

if not for the Israel percentage being shown on Italian televison during the SF, what would Israel's odds be now?

I was looking at comments under Israel ESC articles - usually pro Israel just because of the protests against Eden.

It's more solid than leaks although 40% from two countries is more compelling. Italy was "leaking actual votes", Sweden was an exit poll?

Serbia has enough friends probably but had Germany or UK sent it would have been guaranteed last place. The not enough friends is not an excuse but it helps from finishing last.

it was a poll by Sweden's biggest newspaper after SF 2.

those are countries with a very varied demographic (sweden/italy). there has to be some doubt it won't be reflected across all of the voting countries participating to the same extent. my gut call is that it won't be, but I'm not dogmatic.

There's a lot of songs you might only see on eurovision or
in some half full bar on holiday whilst supping ouzo
or cheapo brandy.

Just learned that Taylor Swift is playing a concurrent show right now and it is apparently streamed (illicitly). Account for the gay and female audience (and vote) at the ESC to be considerably smaller than usual.
