one good reason for farah's poor form at SPOTY is not getting the popular northern vote being from london
also see trott is no northerner and pretty close too london herself it certainly has a big impact too voting as we have seen many times across all specials the northern vote is vast and loyal although jess never won SPOTY her voting figures were always impressive and she was unlucky to come up against such big guns at the time. were in a very good area on this thread |

almost certain AB has never been shortlisted before either, which this year has to be a major plus given how many are in with a chance.
people like peaty and whitlock who have been on it two years running might be passed by this year for the likes of skelton and brownlee who have never been shortlisted also i see AB has had major surgery and a host of injury problems too overcome and win gold again all makes for a good story to tell the voters |
|
By:
AB and NS will both be in 20's next week. Love the ramping though.
|
|
By:
this story is far from finished
ladcrooks are now 7/2 brownlee |
|
By:
what AB did is what SPOTY is all about, he'll have the whole of yorkshire voting for him for starters and probably most of great britain
game changing day . http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/triathlon/37412774 |

the scene of them on the floor after the rio race congratulating each other is just another perfect piece of this story and when put together with AB'S injury comeback and then helping his bruv over the line in mexico with the hollies singing in the background is a golden dream for the producers of SPOTY

lol JD
this is the moment it happened too AB and nobody helped him, even JB went past him. like he said until you've been through it, you don't know what it feels like another snippet of the bigger picture we'll see on the night, when it all comes together too completely WOW the audience . http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/triathlon/8853123.stm |

...how about Skelton? Is he now yesterday's used fish and chip paper likely to receive the SPOTY LAA at best?
Personally I would have Charlotte du Jardin, Sophie Christiansen and Natasha Baker all ahead of Skelton for a shortlist place, but each to their own opinion. |
|
By:
ive answered that already JD lol
his biggest problem is making the shortlist, if he does he is a massive runner like AB both have the best back stories, that people buy into...along with there great achievements |
|
By:
just doubling my chances of one making the shortlist in a very, very, very open and tough year
|
|
By:
imo ive got the best two runners in the field, coz on the night everyone gets shown winning what they've won
but its how they won it and what they went through too win it, plus as in AB case, how they handled themselves afterwards AB retaining triathlon gold is an amazing feat in itself that has never been done before, in one of the toughest sports on the planet hence competitors collapsing and nearly dying when doing it |
|
By:
the drift in price on skelton although i understand it, is still strange.
the market is obviously very confident the top 3 all make the shortlist, hence why none have drifted in AB price crash and NK has picked up all the slack as its uncertain whether he will make the list or not. especially as more people come into the reckoning. i guess that's the way this market works, and im guessing if NK does make the shortlist he'll crash back into single figures..given a decent edit on the night and possible a documentary leading up too the award night. all very interesting this SPOTY market, its like playing chess |

...though chess is not a sport, like darts it's a game

the media around AB is only just beginning too, once they get back from mexico every tv station in the land will be fighting tooth and nail too land AB on one of there tv shows
were gonna get this rammed down our throats for at least another few weeks yet, one of the most greatest sporting stories ever !! its a planet wide story of brotherly love, a good news story in a world of destruction and devastation within a month or so the whole country will know the story, and the only way he does not win SPOTY is if he's left off the shortlist simples |
|
By:
i know all about darts, i throw enough
|
|
By:
3 bookies are now 5/2 on oddschecker
don't miss the boat some are still 6/1 CHOO CHOO !! |
|
By:
were heading for a flip/flop with the most boring dullard on the planet
mr no personality AB has proper cheekie chappie lovable qualities |

The other angle which you perhaps have not yet considered is as follows:
As kind as it 'appeared' to help brother Johnny over the finish line, is that not unfair outside assistance in a brutally physical sport where 'loss of condition' as in Tennis does not allow treatment nor assistance? It was quite clear that Johnny was dillusional and fatigued to the extent that he may not have been able to get to the finish line unaided. At the time brother Alistair helped him reach the line, brother Johnny could still have become World Champion had Mario Mola finished lower down the order - would that have been a fair result or brought the result and sport into disrepute? Is that brotherly assistance therefore not tantamount to cheating? After helping brother Johnny reach the line, what if Alistair had rugby tackled Mario Mola to prevent him from reaching the finish line - would that also be OK? [Just a couple of opposing thoughts from the other side which most of the public will no doubt also consider.] |
|
By:
Although a heart-warming moment, one could ask whether Johnny Brownlee truly deserves his Silver medal?
It seems there was an appeal that was dismissed by the ITU: "Following an appeal by the Spanish Triathlon Federation to disqualify Jonathan Brownlee for accepting assistance from Alistair Brownlee to finish the 2016 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Cozumel, during which Jonathan struggled with heat exhaustion in the final portion of the run, the ITU competition jury unanimously ruled against disqualifying Jonathan. The ITU Competition Jury made this decision in accordance to Appendix K, Rule 7, which states that athletes can receive help from another athlete, Technical Official or Race Official." |
|

that didn't happen so forget that as for the rest its in the rules that another athlete is allowed to help another in trouble the ITU competition jury unanimously ruled against disqualifying Jonathan says it all |
|
By:
appreciate the other side of the fence as you would put it, but just nit picking as only less than 1% of public will care about such stuff.
the majority will see it for what it is, helping your younger brother who is clearly very distressed, too finish the race and get him medical care ASAP at that point i dont think AB gave a sh!t about his own race, which he clearly could of won. when AB was in the same situation in london in 2010, JB ran past him lol but that's the younger brother trying to beat his older sibling the heart warming stuff is the older brother caring for his younger sibling stuff of dreams for tv producers |
|
By:
...all quite true army. I don't think the TV producers will be short of useful edits for this years SPOTY, such as when Mo Farah fell, got up and still won!
|
|
By:
back on track so too speak, we discussed sinfield's massive leeds support last year.
which helped get him 270,000 votes well a reminder too all the brownlee's are from leeds too leeds is the 2nd most populated region in the country . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_districts_by_population the northern vote is vast and loyal the act of brotherly love shown by AB will be lapped up in his home region and across all of Yorkshire a place where over 5 million people live a place where people give a sh1t about there own kind and who do pick up the phone and vote in a split vote year, leeds and yorkshire on its own will go along way too giving AB the SPOTY award |
|
By:
mo farah's vote is glass
couldn't win or come close in weaker years he's from london, worst RTV area in the country for loyal support as been proved by his recent efforts he'd have far more chance if he was from up north FACT |
|
By:
"couldn't win or come close in weaker years" - nor could Andy Murray in his first 6 shortlisted visits to SPOTY where he got less than 20k in each of those first 6 visits, yet he has since won SPOTY twice and current favourite for a third win!
In every year there can be only one winner and in those 'weaker years' Mo Farah was up against someone who had done something (almost) unique: 2011 King Cav won the TDF Green Jersey Points classification AND become Road Race World Champion - Mo finished 3rd of 10 2012 Wiggins won the TDF Yellow Jersey General classification AND become Time Trial Olympic Champion - Mo finished 4th of 12 2013 Murray won Wimbledon, the first Brit to do so for 77 years - Mo finished 4th of 10 2015 Murray won the Davis Cup for Britain, the first British win in 79 years - Mo finished 7th of 12 The beauty of Sports Personality is that every dog can have it's day. Murray's nine shortlist attempts resulted in finishes as follows: 2005 Not in the top 3 of 6 2006 Not in the top 3 of 6 2007 8th of 10 2008 6th of 10 2009 7th of 10 2011 5th of 10 2012 3rd of 12 2013 1st of 10 2015 1st of 12 |
|
By:
...purely out of interest army, do you think Nick Skelton is a more deserving shortlist nominee than say Sophie Christiansen who has cerebral palsy yet managed to win 3 paralympic gold medals at both London 2012 and Rio 2016?
|
|
By:
mo will never have his day and this year is the toughest in the awards history
once murray won wimbledon, he became scotlands best athlete ever and one of britains all time greats ofc he was transcended too spoty stardom especially with the loyal northern vote, the scots are far more proud of there own kind than the english will ever be |
|
By:
JD
if you have read the thread properly, its as clear as crystal i think Nick is more deserving than anyone of being shortlisted i think he should be the 1st person on the list hopefully McCoy will be on the panel and he will make sure of it |
|
By:
the more north you go, the more loyal the people
thats why farah has fallen short, its far tougher for southerner to get the love and affection of the GBP simple fact |
|
By:
...all true army, all true, though there wasn't much loyalty shown to Yorkshire lasses Jess Ennis and Lizzie Armitstead nor to Northern lass Lucy Bronze last year.
Out of interest, how many do you think will be in the shortlist this year? And in that shortlist, which cyclists do you think will make the cut? |
|
By:
northern people hate southerners far more than southerners hate northerners
so someone from the south has to work 5 times as hard to get the respect of there opposing region if someone from the north does well at something, southerners say, yeah well done good on ya if someone from the south does well at something, northerners say fecking cockney *****, so so deserved it more (someone from up north) obviously not everyone, but that is a lot of the thinking behind the north/south divide and thats why northerners clearly do better in all public votes the southerner to win has too be clearly outstanding too stand a chance, having gained the respect of the north whereas the northerner could be good but not great and still have a chance too win that's the way i read great britain anyway |
|
By:
jess has had massive voting figures if you check the numbers JD
just came up against top class opponents also its far tougher for females to win SPOTY |
|
By:
i think the shortlist will be 15
trott and 1 paralympian cyclist that's it |
|
By:
regarding my region post
were talking minority thinking i would of thought but in a vote where less than 400,000 votes usually wins it a tiny swing in logic decides a winner |
|
By:
if kevin sinfield was born and bread in london and lived there his whole life
do you think he would of still got 270,000 votes ?? i don't for 1 second |
|
By:
when we look back at this year, whether its on new years eve or 2/3/4 years down the line
what is the standout moment people will remember the most andy winning wimbledon will be up there admittingly rio Olympics where many retained there golds and others got there 1st and multiple golds, like trott and farah willet, froome, hamilton, joshua etc or the moment a sporting hero helped his brother finish a race now all sports fans will remember nearly of those instantly but what about a casual person who just watches SPOTY on the night and vaguely follows sport as much as anything else in there lives. do they remember all the great sporting achievements, given how many there were or do they remember a brother helping a brother as there standout moment from a very busy year pretty easy answer |
|
By:
also remembering his sporting achievement was one of the best and toughest given his sport, only to be now recognised so much coz of an act of kindness
after going through the same distress his brother did in 2010 and being held back by injuries in recent years all in the edit on the night, but only one winner imo |
