About time we had one (sorry if there's is already one and I missed it.

Obvious choices this year are:-

Jenson Button, assuming he wins the Drivers'
Champs (or possibly even if he doesn't - he's a much more popular choice
than Lewis Hamilton could ever have been in his hey-day year).

Andy Murray if he makes the final of Wimbledon, though I'd still go for
Button even if both him and Murray won their respective events.
Curiously Murray has been matched recently at the same odds he was
when he was still in with a small chance to win the French Open.

Of course there's also the possibility (don't laugh) that we might win
The Ashes, which brings into play a number of options, though I doubt
Kevin Pietersen is popular enough, especially being South African, and Flintoff
might not play due to his ankle problems.

Are there any other obvious candidates from or major events in other sports
that I've completely overlooked?

It's going to hit XF just as much as SPOTY. SPOTY will be first up which is an advantage in itself. Last year we were all celebrating a great Olympics so think viewers would be down anyway. How many viewers in 2007?
Report GeorgeBrush • November 16, 2009 5:18 PM GMT
xf will get the usual 15m I suspect. Spoty will be way down. I reckon ITV will try to hijack the whole slot too.

Ennis wins this at a canter IMO.

The reception in her home town will be immense. She is very modest and likeable.

Despite some Beeb ramping, Button just isn't very popular. In hard times, people will not be voting for the very rich. The girl next door (who isn't too pretty to alienate the ladies) wins this year.

Haye is too arrogant and not enough people saw him fight.

Giggs is a live one but the wealth rule applies.

Ennis, Giggs and Button is the top 3.

The only way she loses is if she dresses like a** (like Adlington did).

Looking at the prices now Giggs has certainly caused the big drift on Haye/Button - probably cos they are the top men to stand a chance, whereas Ennis' price has shifted very little really - possibly cos she will have a lot of the female vote and anyone who doesn't like football (there are a few of us about). Are people who bet on such a thing as this really indicative of the general feeling of the people who actually vote - I seem to recall that Joe Publics voting behaviour in SPOTY has not exactly mirrored the way the betting has gone.

exactly muppet moans

2008 Year 55

1st Chris Hoy (cycling)
2nd Lewis Hamilton (motor racing)
3rd Rebecca Adlington (swimming)

Adlington was massive on here with what seemed like several people, but really was just a few, hyping her to the hilt.
Hamilton was the original favourite with surges whenever he won a grand prix towards the latter half of the season.
I believe Hoy was second if not third fav on the day. Losers blamed the Scottish vote :D

2007 Year 54

1st Joe Calzaghe (boxing)
2nd Lewis Hamilton (motor racing)
3rd Ricky Hatton (boxing)

Calzaghe should have won the previous year imo. I think Hamilton was the favourite while Hatton attracted northern support. I seem to remember the odds on Calzaghe were quite high and they tumbled in the last week though I could be wrong.

2006 Year 53
1st Zara Phillips (equestrian)
2nd Darren Clarke (golf)
3rd Beth Tweddle (gymnastics)

Darren Clarke was a massive odds on fav based on the ryder cup win and the sympathy felt for the death of his wife. There was late support for Zara - betting wise and at least one person ( attitude adjuster ? ) supported her on the forum.

2005 Year 52
1st Andrew Flintoff (cricket)
2nd **MacArthur (sailing)
3rd Steven Gerrard (football)

a clear cut win for the fav - Steven Gerrard (football) getting third not a plus for Giggs this year

2004 Year 51

1st Kelly Holmes (athletics)
2nd Matthew Pinsent (rowing)
3rd Andrew Flintoff (cricket)

I think Kelly Holmes was fav - she was with me anyhow :)

2003 Year 50

1st Jonny Wilkinson (rugby)
2nd Martin Johnson (rugby)
3rd Paula Radcliffe (athletics)

imo Martin Johnson deserved it more but Jonny W kicked the winning drop goal in extra time and hogged the media coverage.
( my first year on betfair - don't remember too much about it but I assume JW was heavily odds on. )

I think the earlier poll on this thread of 29% to Button and 21% to Giggs is currently about right. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

BBC website exerts include:

Wales and Manchester United football legend Ryan Giggs, 36, has been named the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2009 following a public telephone vote.

Due to Giggs' commitment to a Manchester United Champions League game in Germany on Tuesday, he was handed the award on Sunday by Ferguson at Manchester United's Carrington training ground.

This is the second time Giggs has won the award, having last been awarded the trophy in 1996, and the evergreen Cardiff-born star has had another outstanding year.

Manchester United won the Barclays Premier League, the Carling Cup and were Uefa Champion League finalists, while Giggs himself won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year Award and was nominated for European footballer of the year.

Giggs has won the adoration of home fans and respect of rival supporters throughout the world during an outstanding career

The Player of the Year award came amid stiff opposition from team-mates Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin van der Sar as well as Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.

The award had previously eluded the player, who went on to maintain his remarkable record of scoring in every one of the 19 Premier League seasons, including a fine hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur in September to help him top 150 goals for his club.

Giggs remains a threat to defences and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has advised aspiring players to follow his protege's example of maintaining physical fitness and mental toughness.

Now in his 19th season with the club, he has won more team honours than any of his predecessors.

Among his many records and accolades, Giggs is the only Red Devil to have played in their 11 Premier League wins and the only player in the game to have won that number of titles.

Cardiff-born Giggs has outstripped Old Trafford legend Bobby Charlton's club appearance record of 758 and has now played more than 800 games for the club since making his debut as a 17-year-old in 1991.

One of the few signs of Giggs' age is that in the last season he has switched from winger to central midfield, but he has yet to find himself usurped by a younger player.

The former Welsh international's standing among his fellow professionals is also a huge mark of respect for his evergreen talents.
