The feckers should never have turned this into a lifetime achievement 'gig', but seeing as they have he's a big runner isn't he?

Top 3 quite easily, could threaten Button and Ennis imo

This market is not about making a judgement on the achievements present or past. It is about making a judgement on how many people will pick up their phones and what number they will dial.

GeorgeBrush 05 Dec 07:27
Probably won't bother CC. Looks a likely winner to me, particularly since I saw the Guardian poll. It all looks very tight there, but Giggs is the only one with an organised group of supporters ready to pile in on the night.

Does facebook membership equate to picking up the phone on a Sunday night and voting for Giggs. Like the RATM no.1 campaign I suspect that facebook group membership and actual voting/buying will be very different. If you could have voted before Sunday night I'd say Giggs was a sound back but they don't open voting until 7pm in order to stop these very orchestrated campaigns. If you're on at 25/1 and above though it is a very different story although I'd be tempted to cash in now.

GL anyway.

Alex the Welsh vote was very different. They had a week to vote for him not 2 hours.

1 for BECKY BREWERTON - WHO?
2 for NATHAN CLEVERLY- WHO?
3 for RYAN GIGGS
4 for LOUISE RICKARD - WHO?
5 for JAMIE ROBERTS- (third)
6 for GERAINT THOMAS - WHO? (2nd)

Calls cost 15p from a BT landline. Mobiles and other networks may be higher. Lines are open from 08.00 to 20.00 each day, Monday 30 November to Saturday 5 December when they finally close at 20.00.

Voting not limited to wales either.
Report Cider • December 11, 2009 11:44 AM GMT
Maybe something in the programme as well. For me Giggs is in the right spot as 2nd fav with the information we have at the moment. Nobody knows what exactly what impact xf will have on the voting, or of course the edit (altho we can be pretty sure F1 will get a good one, but they have MOTD too).
Report Alex the old wrinkled retainer • December 11, 2009 11:49 AM GMT
Look back at the Calzaghe win in 2007. I don't think that it would be smart to carry a red on Giggs.
Report Ernesto • December 11, 2009 11:51 AM GMT
Given that Cycling organised very effectively last year what are the chances of them doing so again but for a single candidate not four. Granted there isn't the Scottish vote behind him and the IOM probably has less of a voting block.

Hell of a lot of active cyclists in Britain who know all about Cav and who would be less inclined to be sitting in watching the X factor. Decent price imo
Report bunnyman • December 11, 2009 12:08 PM GMT
In my cyber travels Cavendish's name came up much more than I expected. I would expect him to be in the top 3 along with Button and Giggs, but he could miss out if the home support for Ennis in Sheffield gets her into the top 3.

None of us can be sure whether the Man U and Welsh support will translate into votes. My instinct is that it will do massively, but I could be totally wrong, in which case I'll take it on the chin. But if he does romp the vote and I don't win big I'll be as mad as hell because in hindsight it will all look so blindingly obvious.
Report seanvice • December 11, 2009 12:16 PM GMT
I dont expect Cav to come anywhere near the top 3.

My pick to upset the 3 favs and grab 3rd spot would be Beth Tweddle.
Report attitude adjuster • December 11, 2009 12:17 PM GMT

Report bunnyman • December 11, 2009 12:24 PM GMT
Hope you're right Seanvice - when I read the following story about her not getting a phone call from the Prime Minister I backed her for top 3.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/article6881563.ece

I also thought the following line was very powerful

perhaps the greatest feat ever achieved by a British athlete of either sex in the history of indoor sports.

from this article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2009/oct/20/beth-tweddle-jenson-button

Trouble is deserving or not, I have picked up little support for her in polls and forums, so I'm not too hopefully, though I'd be pleased to be proved wrong.
Report seanvice • December 11, 2009 12:44 PM GMT
I pretty sure its going to be Idowu, Daley, Murray in the bottom 3.

I would also say Cavendish and Strauss 6th and 7th, I think Tweddle (along with Ennis) is the one most dependant on coverage, with no coverage she could well be around 6th/7th herself, with a lot of coverage she could be 3rd/4th.

If you remeber the year she was 3rd she did the A.Bar's routine during the show, and James Tosland was 500 odd votes off 3rd in 2007 after he played an instrument during the show after being a rank rank outsider.

The only way Ennis has any chance of winning is if they talk her up hugley, she gives a nice interview and an added bonus of maybe setting up a sand pit or high jump mat for her in the arena for her to demonstrate like Tweddle in '06.

Report curious-cat • December 11, 2009 2:54 PM GMT
also much less than the population of Scotland which is over 5m.

so proportionately if Hoy got 100,000 Scottish votes then Giggs would get 60,000.

But more importantly that is assuming Giggs is as popular in Wales as Hoy was in Scotland.

This bit in particular

A modest man who, as a youngster, was given the chance to swap his Wales shirt for an England one, and see his global profile rocket, but refused to, out of loyalty. The same loyalty that has kept him at one club for 19 years.

this made me smile as well:

A vote for Giggs is a vote against the Ashley Coles of this world. Meaning Cheryl's little crooner, Joe, might win X-Factor tomorrow night, while her little whiner loses on the other side.

And that, in itself, is a good enough reason to wish Giggs well.

Man U have chosen today to announce that Giggs is to be offered a new contract - interesting timing. It ensures that Giggs is making the headlines at the right time and gives a platform for coverage such as this in the Telegraph:

[i]Giggs, who has been shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, will take his first-team service at Old Trafford to the 20-year mark. But with momentum building behind Giggss prospects of winning the prestigious BBC award, Ferguson insists that the Welshman would be a perfect recipient. He said:

He couldn't play for England as he was born in Wales and had 4 Welsh grandparents.
However he did play for the English Schools team as their qualifying rules are not as strict. In fact anyone who goes to school in England qualifies.

Because he is literally a throw-back to the days before the Sky Super Sunday Premier League, when money had yet to skew the values and turn the heads of the luckiest working-class men ever born."

It's a good point, from the mirror article today - while we often hate opposing players, Giggs never seems to fall into that category. He has great respect amongst pretty much all fans.

"whoever managed to get 50p matched at 1000-1 must be feeling pretty smug. they already have a 200-1 winner."

As I said on my hihlights post that was deleted that was me, unless my memory is playing tricks.  I'm thought it was more than 50p.  Certainly the liability pre nominations was a fair bit higher than £500.  I'd obviously taken a position against some or one of the assumed contenders at that point and was equaling that liability on a few rags

The only 1000 winner I ever laid.  Can't think of any other lay that lost close to that price.  I know a friend put £40 @ 25/1 or £50 @ 20/1 with one bookie to help me get out after he was nominated.

On most things tbf. Where does one even begin when attempting to pay tribute to a poster of such extraordinary stature? Quite simply, we are talking about a giant among men, a colossus of the forum world, whose contributions will surely be remembered long after the last bets have been placed and the final thread consigned to history.

A rare combination of wit, wisdom, intelligence and sheer personality. A poster whose presence elevated every discussion they graced and whose absence would leave a void impossible to fill. There have been many posters over the years, but very few who could genuinely be described as one of a kind.

If this forum had a Hall of Fame, their portrait would occupy the entire entrance hall. An absolute legend, and a privilege to have shared this little corner of the internet with them. We shall not see their like again!
