thomas :0 actually [ in a posh voice ] we have the electrician doing some installations of a modern technoligical nature and he expects me to take him to the pub and feed him since that's what I did a couple of weeks ago so I've been in the Queens Head. barmaid :x waitress :x :x I've gone all trembly now :p anyway this is what I found waiting when I got back on here ......... I think Jenson Button will win although I've only done a few trades and nothing massive. Though since thomas posted that he will be on the Jonathon Ross show this Friday that's a big plus. Ryan Giggs is massively overhyped and I've laid accordingly. I've given reasons on the Specials threads but basically he's not had any outstanding personal achievment this year ..... I believe the chance of a concerted campaign by Man Utd supporters are slim [ more people in football hate them than support them ] ........ similar campaigns in previous years have been unsuccessful ........ and in Wales he hasn't got the massive support that say, Hoy had in Scotland, because rugby is more popular ( internationals are a sell out, while the stadium is far too large for football internationals ) and also Giggs rarely played for Wales as Ferguson usually provided him with a sick note. 'Since his debut in 1991 against West Germany, Giggs failed to attend a friendly international until some nine years later, missing a massive 18 consecutive friendly games. Officially he was "injured" for these games, though there is no doubt that was just an excuse in most instances.' It's little known that he was unable to play for England as he was born in Wales and both parents and all four grandparents are Welsh. He was brought up in Manchester and I assume he would have preferred to play for England as he's been unable to play in any major championships with Wales. I haven't got strong opinions about the others .....probably the next 4 in the betting ...... Haye has a winning personality ..... Cavendish for his sprinting in the Tour De France .... Ennis for whatever it was that she did ............. Strauss for his captaincy and personal contribution to winning the ashes .......... Beth Tweddle won gold at the World C'ships in 2006 and in 2009 another gold came her way in a different event, the floor exercises. However in 2008 she came 4th in the Olympics so although that shouldn't count against her it might. In 2006 she did a routine in the studio on the bars which won her 3rd place in SPOTY imo. Personally I think Murray reaching number 2 in the world in tennis is a better achievment but I bow to public opinion which appears to be against him. I will probably get involved on the night and am awaiting the beeb's presentations of the competititors as well as what jiggery pokery ( such as Beth Tweedlles bars routine ) will be provided inside the studio. I would have posted earlier but there was a partial cut-off in the electricity :( |

2008 Year 55
1st Chris Hoy (cycling) 2nd Lewis Hamilton (motor racing) 3rd Rebecca Adlington (swimming) Adlington was massive on here with what seemed like several people, but really was just a few, hyping her to the hilt. Hamilton was the original favourite with surges whenever he won a grand prix towards the latter half of the season. I believe Hoy was second if not third fav on the day. Losers blamed the Scottish vote :D 2007 Year 54 1st Joe Calzaghe (boxing) 2nd Lewis Hamilton (motor racing) 3rd Ricky Hatton (boxing) Calzaghe should have won the previous year imo. I think Hamilton was the favourite while Hatton attracted northern support. I seem to remember the odds on Calzaghe were quite high and they tumbled in the last week though I could be wrong. 2006 Year 53 1st Zara Phillips (equestrian) 2nd Darren Clarke (golf) 3rd Beth Tweddle (gymnastics) Darren Clarke was a massive odds on fav based on the ryder cup win and the sympathy felt for the death of his wife. There was late support for Zara - betting wise and at least one person ( attitude adjuster ? ) supported her. 2005 Year 52 1st Andrew Flintoff (cricket) 2nd **MacArthur (sailing) 3rd Steven Gerrard (football) a clear cut win for the fav - Steven Gerrard (football) getting third not a plus for Giggs this year 2004 Year 51 1st Kelly Holmes (athletics) 2nd Matthew Pinsent (rowing) 3rd Andrew Flintoff (cricket) I think Kelly Holmes was fav - she was with me anyhow :) 2003 Year 50 1st Jonny Wilkinson (rugby) 2nd Martin Johnson (rugby) 3rd Paula Radcliffe (athletics) imo Martin Johnson deserved it more but Jonny W kicked the winning drop goal in extra time and hogged the media coverage. ( my first year on betfair - don't remember too much about it but I assume JW was heavily odds on. ) |

This year what is different is that Button had the world championship won from his points in the first half of the season ............ if he had had his wins towards the end of the season SPOTY would be no contest.
As I've said elsewhere I'm no petrolhead but possibly what detracts from Button is that this season possibly more than other seasons showed it's how good the car is rather than the driver ... I read a quote from someone in the sport who said it's 75% car and 25% driver. When there's not much difference between the cars I assume the driver's percentage goes up and vice versa. The three outsiders ... Tom Daley, Andy Murray and Phillips Idowu have all had significant achievments so I'd say overall it's a strong year with Giggs being so prominent in the betting making it look like an inferior year. |

I was able to do a quick trade ( 2.02 to 1.88 ) so I can sit back in anticipation with an all green book on an event I know little about. No, it's not 'Leprauchauns I have met whilst under the influence'. I actually watched some last Sat as you know and it was great fun. I think I was put off watching by deep-seated memories of the BBC showing 'Come Dancing' when I was still living at home with my parents. There's a drink behind the bar for you in TT's pub :D |
