Scotland are showing much improved form and seem to be benefitting from the coaching of Cotter. Eddie Jones had a game plan ideally suited to moving the ageing South African pack around but Scotland are a younger outfit. The problem is that there really wasn't any fluke about that result.I still expect Scotland to win seeing as there are only a few days before the game.

Quick turnaround is the biggest problem for sure. I don't believe either that Scotland are significantly worse that the springboks. Market looks about right to me.

Coming off that emotional high will be difficult for Japan. Scotland are lucky they have them now and not first up. 1.20 is not a steal but I would not lay it with much certainty either. Like TheVis said... market looks about right.

What doesn't look right though is all the money matched down as low as evens on Japan. Somebody was having a laffff in the aftermath of the victory over SA :)

some slightly strange comments from eddie jones
“I don’t think this will be a pretty game: they’ll maul, they’ll punt the ball high, they’ll play off Greig Laidlaw at scrum-half, who’s their key man." either he is trying some sort of mind games or he hasn't bothered to have scotland watched lately. |

Sounds like Scotland from the 90s :)

that game V the springboks will have taken an awful lot of gas out of japans first choice 15
There is no way in the world that any side could manage to replicate than intensity and freshness 4 days later. scotland will come in to the game 100 % whereas Japan will have tired bodies and aching limbs However I think it will be close and Japan could even cover the Hcap but Scotland to win for me |

interesting stats from the SA game. Japan had zero handling errors which is incredibly impressive although worth pointing out that they also tried zero offloads.
it really was a triumph for keeping for simplicity and playing to your, obviously well drilled, strengths. scotland having had a look at what japan do is a huge advantage compared to SA who were caught cold. i believe steve borthwick is a forwards coach and his stock will be high after that match. it was a lesson in simplicity. they didn't bother competing at defensive line outs and looked to stop the driving maul before it started while they concentrated on accuracy and organisation at their own line out and had good variety. at scrum time they actually used the hooker to hook (shock horror) and just get the ball out quickly before SA scrum power could take over. this took SA by surprise several times as that just isn't what teams they are used to playing do. they were busy trying to shove them backwards off the ball and while the shoving bit worked but the ball had gone before it had any effect. an object lesson to any weight disadvantaged pack imo. if they can repeat all of that it will be a very tough match for scotland but the element of surprise has gone, unless of course they have another sneaky plan up their sleeve for this match, which is very possible. |

Good points fellas although I still think Japan are too big. What surprised me was how strong they were, time and again when SA reached the Japan half they struggled to make any progress, forced back by the power of the Japan side. Defensively they are very strong.
I think therefore Scotland will struggle to score many tries, it will be a tight game and Japan might just edge it again, as Scotland will be nervy at the end of the match. |

I too think Japan too high at 6/1. Scotland always seem to come into international matches on a tide of supporters' emotion and hype and nearly always fail to deliver.I think Laidlaw is hugely overrated and if he is their key man then they'll have it all to do to cover the 14.5 handicap (Japan 2.04) let alone win the match.

well japan are now ranked above scotland as are samoa & SA so on that basis if they qualify it must be
seen as a huge shock ![]() |

Jonny Gray a decent price on the sportsbook at 6/1 to score a try imo.
scores his fair share for a lock and given their stature Japan players might find it very hard to stop a big unit like him if he gets a chance near the line. |

South Africa went into the match thinking they could dominate up front and secure the majority of the ball and thus control the game. Eddie Jones was shrewd enough to develop a game plan that moved the ball away from the set-piece and contact area as quickly as possibly, and aided by great commitment and execution from his players, the Japanese were running the ball all over the field whilst the Bok forwards still had their heads up each other's ar$es.
Scotland won't fall for that. They will win this game, but it won't be massive and it probably won't be pretty. Jocks by 12-15 for me. Anyone got an opinion on the France v Romania game? I'm going tonight (free ticket) and want to have something to cheer on. The fun bet is Romania to cover the handicap of 36 points, but I think the French could easily run in five or more tries and the points should rack up pretty quickly. Don't know much about Romanian rugby other than they lost (by 21-16) to Tonga in their most recent warm up, and Tonga lost in the first round to Georgia, so I don't think Romania are up to much. |

Scotland have 5 big ball carriers in the back 5 of the pack, plus two props who can make yards too.
i'm not a big fan of Dave "the Dunt" Denton as he handling and vision are not good but he could be very useful in this match up. We saw when they did have the opportunity that the Boks managed to punch holes right up the middle and seemed to score tries with relative ease that way. For some reason tho they didn't continue the tactic and seemed determined the try and get it wide, i guess assuming the Japanese were tiring, who knows. I'm guessing Scotland will be looking for pretty direct yard gaining, tackle inducing, energy sapping forward play and who can blame them. i'm going to risk a whole carton of eggs on the face and predict a fairly comfortable Scotland win in the end by around 18-20pts. I very very rarely bet on the actual outcome of Scotland games so the worst that can happen is I'm wrong ![]() |

Japan played their final in their first game. Expect the Scots to hammer them today.

By:
scots to play off set pieces and keep the ball in the pack, japan put a massive effort in to beat the boks,no way they`ll have the same energy today on a short turnaround,i fully expect the scots to to cover the h/cap,this is Scotland however so the stakes will be small

Danno - Romania won't be up to much but they are priced accordingly. You could also consider +19 on the 1st half cap.

The betting on this match has me flummoxed as it's a fact of life that Scotland always choke on the big occasion.Even if they do manage to win (which i don't think they will) just can't see them beating the 14.5 handicap.

Smaller pitch?

smaller than a twickenham or wembley surely no?

Yes but I thought you were making reference to their last game which was played at Brighton.

have done scotland pen or drop goal fsp for a cheap thrill, £30 at 5/4

Brighton looked small. Pitches have to be a certain minimum but the footie grounds are usually a good bit smaller than traditional rugby grounds, especially Twickers and Murrayfield as mentioned.

Scotland will keep this tight for the first 20 mins (or even first half) chipping away with penalties due to bigger pack / tier 1 team playing tier 3 team etc (no R Gray is a giveaway).............. so the Scots to restore order but points under 51.5 (books)....... should be the call .......... hopefully good trade out options with the u/o 50.5 on here .............. can see a scotland 3 pointer being the first scoring play
