Unlucky stewards, but it didn't look likely at halftime. I didn't expect Court to be as bad as he was, can count himself lucky he wasn't injured. Might be the kick the provinces need to develop props, he's not even first choice in Ulster. Hagan showed great potiential at Connacht last season, regularly beat good scrums in Magners. Leinster signed him when he should have stayed at Connacht as he's only bench warming there.

Anyway, who greased the ball for scrums ?

Court is first choice at Ulster. But he plays tight head. We are equally screwed with Hagan as we don't have any props that can play both sides and until we do or we go to 23 per team it will be a problem

First choice as loosehead, big difference. The Six Nations need to make rugby squads 23 players so that a specialist tighthead and loosehead are on the bench.

Hagan should be playing regularly, Connacht have a good history developing props. Munster have an up and coming tighthead in Archer but he's not there yet, prob take another season.

yeah i agree with you on that. And obviously it would be easier for hagan to hold up a scrum at loosehead than Court at tighthead but we are screwed until they go to 23 players. We just don't have that player to play both sides

Hagan would have better than Archer that night alright, but some have said he's unfit at Leinster (??). Hayes was injury free for Ireland for over 10 years.

For such a poxy position in the overall team, pity it has such influence on rugby.

went out to watch the match, have to say that it was embarrassing to watch, ive only seen mismatches like that that in the scrum at junior or underage level.

all our chickens came home to roost, no cover at tighthead, no cover at centre, no cover at scrumhalf.

no forward planning at all, players with 100 caps and no cover behind them heres the logic in that,  players being persisted with beyond all logic and even when you have despensed with them , to go back to them again defies all logic.

it was only englands lack of belief and perhaps lack of experience that stopped us from being totally humiliated. 50 points was well within the remit of this eng team .

we have gone back as a team under kidney and more worringly we have as a squad as in a national squad left a serious vacuum behind our first 22. thats more fightening than todays defeat.

I'm just not sure the problem lies with him(for sure you'd like different players in,and different players in different postions)
Ireland need a lot of things changing(including the Manager)But I feel no matter who you get in with that team currently,i doubt they could do much better.
Ireland have 3-5 years of learning curve coming up.I dont think that will hurt long term.

well put B68, was full of promise when Kidney took over, new players were blooded as we'd got stale under EOS who'd picked same ol same ol & now we've exactly the same with Kidney whose got to a stage where he'll no longer look beyond Leinster/Munster, yes a few token ulstermen get to play but it's no more really. players from connacht & yes even over the sea need to be looked at.

Developement is another ? though, WHEN do players get an opportunity on the big stage without being exposed. With the summer tours now against the big 3 & pumas I don't see fringe players getting a look in? It would be an idea to have some midweek games on the upcoming tour of New Zealand vs the likes of Samoa/Fiji/Tonga etc so the fringe players get an opportunity against international sides as there's no way Court & others will develop & learn vs a full strength NZ side first up.

it's all very inbred from ireland at the moment & if Ingerland dont want Mallet then we should be brave & go for him, an outsider is needed for Ireland to break this cycle.

And a skills/handling coach wouldnt go amiss as well

afterwards they analysed one scrum using an overhead camera ...... the English tighthead bore in on the Irish loosehead while the hooker also concentrated on angling in on the same prop.

I've seen penalties given at scrumtime for a lot less than that.

In view of the fact that England's superior scrummage was the main factor in their win i think it's a legitimate question to ask.

If you look closely enough at any scrum you can find reasons to award pens to either side, but as was pointed out in commentary yesterday when you start going forward a ref is far more likely to penalise you. In many cases both teams are trying to bore in, pull one way or another or a host of other things and generally the stronger side wins. The difference between Ross and Court is that when Ross is faced with various pressures, legal or otherwise, he can respond in kind whereas Court has not the nous or power to know what to do.


There was a good example where Corbisiero pushed Court inwards, then Cole pushed Healey back the other way and the Irish scrum was pincered and in all sorts of trouble. Whether you call it illegal or great scrummaging is entirely down to your own opinion, but the point of it was that Ireland didn't have the power or organisation to prevent it, whereas a stronger scrum could have.

Once Ross got injured I knew we were f88ked , every Irish rugby fan worth his salt knew that without him, we would struggle in a scrum against the English Ladies rugby team. Court is decent/average cover for Healy at LH but not even close to adequate cover as a TH.
We knew it , England knew it and punished us. We need to develop some props!

3 back to back Tests vs NZ in the Summer...it aint going to be pretty.

Ireland look like they have drawn the short straw there. England play 3 tests against SA (who have a new coach and a bunch of older players moving on), Wales play 3 against Australia and for the first time in a hell of a long time should be physically bigger than their opponents.

Ireland get NZ, who rarely ever have a bad month. Wonderful opportunity for Kidney to experiment! A few of the best in NZ having injury troubles though - Kaino, McCaw, Carter etc, so that's a plus at least.

What's with all this 3 Test tour nonsense?  Almost sounds like a bit of a return to the good old days.  Are the sides playing the odd midweeker too - hope so.

Tis upto the home tour nation Vis & as yet no additional fixtures have been mentioned that I can see, would love to see the dirtrackers & the up n comings get a run-out vs regional sides in NZ, god forbid a 2nd string going up against the ab's for 3 tests
