My neighbours son is 17 and has sadly been diagnosed with autism. He is currently taking driving lessons and his test is due in a couple of months but he already has a 26 plate car on the PIP scheme that has been sat on their driveway for the last six weeks. The United Kingdom sure does look after it's citizens Cool

It was circa 750,000 PIP claimants in 2016, now it's 4.1 million.

What did the tories do to the system or elegibility criteria to increase the number of claimants by almost 600% in a decade?

Fortunately there has been a change of political leadership for over two years now, that have been busy reversing Tory 'mistakes'.

We need a reduction in Benefits and money poured into homeland Security over the next few years ..

The labour has introduced stricter criteria for new claimants so that it will be harder to qualify for pip, but they are not taking pip away from claimants who wouldn't qualify by the new criteria. Some will say it's a missed opportunity to kick millions of workshy layabouts off underserved benefits.

They also (to be fair) stopped people being able to get new premium marque cars on motability (another blight on the tories).

It was very fair of them to stop it but they could go a lot further. I don't really see what was wrong with everyone getting the same light blue 3 wheeled Thundersley Invacarriage.

The Thundersleys were very practical and economical and just look at how stylish they were

I used to see them everywhere in the 60s and 70s.

AI Overview

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that affects how a person develops, communicates, and experiences the world.

If we were to believe the mainstream media, the United Kingdom is a broken and soon-to-be-bankrupt nation. However, how can this be true when a physically fit young man is given a brand-new car to help him on his way in life? While this seventeen-year-old may not have a physical disability but he may experience the world in a less typical way—and in my opinion, he is fully justified in qualifying for the vehicle. After all, who is to judge what is "normal"?

The only thing that surprises me is his total lack of interest in it. You would think he’d be sitting inside, pretending to drive all the time, but unfortunately, he isn't. Perhaps that will change if and when he passes his driving test.

If parents can get their kids on DLA then they can also get their free new car. For the parent to drive of course. It's not just a free new car, but all of the associated costs like maintenance and insurance. That obviously means there is no incentive for parent(s) to get their child diagnosed with a mh condition.

DLA is the child version of PIP, so once they reach 17 they can pretty easily morph into being a PIP recipient. That's where the big bucks lays as they can them become a student, qualify for enhanced LCWRA  UC, and keep most of their UC as will as the 'maintenance' loan. Often 'attending' uni remotely.

His parents have their own cars. Their sons car hasn't moved in weeks.
I find it strange that he isn't pestering his parents to put-on L plates and go for a lesson but hat said he is at school during the week and now that the nights are drawing-in that only leaves the weekend. Anyway the car is there ready for him when he requires it and that it must be reassuring for anyone who may experience the world in a less typical-way, that the UK Government has your back.

Makes me proud to be British Happy

They don't have to take the car though, on DLA. They can just take the money and/or free ubers to school for the child. But if the kid is nearly 17 it makes much more sense if they have moved over to PIP, they can get the car in their own name, which for a brand new young driver just the free insurance alone is hugely valuable. I'm be really surprised if this individual wasn't originally on DLA, and now gone for motability once awarded enhanced PIP.

PIP motability permits up to three named drivers, so they can get the free insurance on the vehicle as well.

Ah that’s good then.

Remember not all disabilities are physical
