The public will be able to watch the execution of a former US Army major by firing squad, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has said.

An official from the Defense Department told the BBC the execution of Nidal Hasan, who fatally shot 13 unarmed US soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009, would be livestreamed.

The Pentagon had announced earlier this week that it would execute Hasan in the first military execution in more than 60 years.

"We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public," Hegseth said on Thursday. "Because people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things."

Hegseth said in an interview with conservative TV outlet Real America's Voice that Hasan is "gonna get a firing squad of soldiers. As it should be".

The BBC has contacted the White House for comment on whether President Donald Trump supports a livestreamed public execution.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell had said on Monday that the defence secretary had made the recommendation and Trump approved it.

The execution is scheduled to take place at Fort Hood in Texas on 3 December, the secretary of the US Army said on Tuesday. It will be the first military execution by firing squad since the end of World War Two.

Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist from Virginia, admitted in court that he was the gunman and apologised for "any mistakes". He said during his court-martial in 2013 that he believed he was protecting Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The killings on 5 November 2009 were the deadliest ever non-combat attack on an American military base.

What would be the right penalty for a US Army major who killed 13 unarmed people and wounded 32?

are they going to live stream the execution of WHITE mass shooters

Like who? There may be some white mass shooters Grenade but I don't think there are any who are subject to the U.S. Military Justice System. Civilians would only face the firing squad in states that allow firing squads which is very few.

wouldn't be surprised if this keeps the guy alive for an extended number of years as it goes thru the courts to rule if live streaming it is a "cruel and unusual" punishment, forbidden in the constitution.

There's no precedent for a livestreamed execution. It just goes to show this administration is not messing about.

They'll probably add some cage fighters to the bill and sell tickets, maybe even do it on the whitehouse lawn.

back in the 80's I was in southern crete, watching England play in the euros in a bar on a TV with poor reception.
About 60 minutes in, the screen went hazy and then came back with a fuzzy picure of a hooded guy standing on some gallows, the commentary was in arabic.
Initially I thought it was a film, turned out to be a Lybian TV signal that had over powered the Greek Tv signal and they were showing a real execution.
I never got to watch the end of the footy.

That's the only time I've seen a state execution on TV.

Trump has a lot in common with Gadafi

Looks more painful.

US reputation stinks worldwide since yer man took over, maybe they were always bad and yer man was just more open about badness.
I’ve been there, my wife has family there, NY never really impressed myself, went to trotting, soccer was alright but low level sport.
Went to St Patrick’s parade it was too cold, just went back to pub, it was just like being in any Irish pub.
Would never go back near it cos of yer man’s legacy.

Lapsy's right it's the first live streamed firing squad ever so the advertising revenue potential will be more than the superbowl. They can cut away for ads just as they are squeezing the trigger. It sounds like a classic black mirror episode.

Punishment spot on , get on with it,streaming insane imo  , Hegseth appears to have missed the point that they are Glorifying the demise of this Murderer , certain folks will hero Worship him

Perhaps he will start shouting a well known Phrase ,have they thought about that ?

Not sure how the firing squad Works , would it be usual to gag the prisoner ?

Are they really going to wheel him out in his wheelchair and shoot him? I suppose they will have to unless they carry him to a chair.
