When we say someone died from plague, we mean they died from an infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis.
There are three main forms:
Bubonic plague — bacteria infect the lymph nodes, causing the characteristic swollen, painful “buboes”. This was the most common form during the Black Death.
Septicaemic plague — the bacteria enter the bloodstream, causing severe infection, bleeding and tissue damage.
Pneumonic plague — the infection affects the lungs and can spread between people through respiratory droplets.
The Black Death of the 14th century was primarily caused by Y. pestis, although different forms of plague occurred during the pandemic.
Plague is still around today, but modern antibiotics can usually treat it successfully if diagnosed early.
Next plague of Y. pestis will have a Dawinian effect on the Av demographic.
