We just throw money at problems but how much does it cost for an OAP to live? Most will have the mortgage paid off or getting rent allowance and a bus pass. For a £50 a week spend at Tescos you can live like a king these days.

The UK State Pension is less than most comparable countries both in absolute terms and as a percentage o GDP.
However, in most of Europe, workplace pensions are a rarity and we have the NHS. |

You're better off getting slightly under the amount per week, about 230 quid, from private and government pensions in total, that qualifies you for pension credit.
You could be in this position if you hadn't paid enough stamps over the years. The govt make up the shortfall even if it's only a few pound per week, but it then automatically qualifies you for full housing benefit and no Council tax to pay. I know a friend, no seriously it's not me, like telling the doctor " for a friend's problem"...who gets all his rent paid, plus service charges. You also get free dental treatment plus other benefits. |

Btw, where I live, there are shops and factories constantly advertising jobs, but can't get people to work there...yet, loads of youngsters either not working or building up huge debts at college getting a worthless degree
Soon there will be about 1 in 3 of the population in work, paying taxes, to try and support the other 2 thirds on benefits |

It's an interesting question. No country has managed to implement a nationwide Universal Basic Income system. With UBI there is a high risk of hyperinflation if it's funded by money printing, or triggering the Laffer curve effect if funded by taxing high earners. To fund £50+ a day UBI, the marginal tax rate for middle and high earners would have to go over 70% which risks triggering the Laffer curve effect where high tax rates diminish economic output and reduce overall tax receipts.

I have my doubts on reform being good for state benefit pension for people who need it, I think everything will be private and which will mean less money in you’re working life, which will mean less money spent and economy f more.

I think they will dismantle the English NHS too. Which is quite an iconic institution and probably one thing that makes England a decent country.

I imagine tax payer funded pension schemes are a problem across the developed world. 'We' can now keep people alive way too long, decades past state pension age, and spend £millions doing it. They'll also need wrap around care in many cases, as their own families are not interested. For the families that are interested, it qualifies them for benefits and not having to work anyway! Meanwhile, very few people want to do manual jobs, or to work into their 60s. At the same time, affluent people no longer want to have children.
In other words, they are ponzi schemes where the bottom up funding is running out. As has been covered upthread, there's no incentive to contribute as people who will have contributed absolutely nothing will still get full state pension, and enhanced pension credit in some circumstance. The only solution is to make it solely contributions based, but that would take decades to filter through and obviously too politically toxic for anyone to try. |

There's no answer that I can see, due to the factors I've laid out. There are not many people nowadays that don't feel like they are entitled to something for nothing.
A starting point is giving nothing to foreigners. But that won't come from the uni party, obviously. As they created what we now enjoy. The whole world thinking that we a ripe for cadging (they're not wrong!) |
