The pipe smoking pillock Wilson's government brought in the Marine Broadcasting Act in 1967 banning the offshore pirate radio stations, just to protect the wretched BBC's monopoly of the airwaves. Didn't work very well as the legend of Radio Caroline grew and grew .

Caroline are still thriving although of course now legally and are currently playing listeners top 500 chart this weekend all the way through to Monday. And fantastic listening it is too, proper music.

Think I remember seeing part of a documentary about that way back.

I was struggling to run a farm business from 1972 and the problems of doing so under the Wilson Government are still seared on my brain. To my surprise, it is remarkably difficult to find tax rates pre 1990 on the internet. I suppose that there was no internet then but from memory I think it was around 33% basic rate and 90% plus for highest rates in the Wilson years-and he still had to borrow from the IMF. Hence the Beatles and Rolling Stones and many other wealthy people exiting their UK domicile. Most of them never came back. History is repeating itself now as high net worth individuals move from paying some UK tax to paying none. Most tax is optional. If all else fails you can stop working and live on benefits which are tax free to you but a burden on everyone who does pay tax.
