The guy who was heavily aligned with net zero when he was mayor of Manchester is going to start drilling again? A likely story. He was responsible for establishing some of the most aggressive regional climate targets in the UK.

By:
Tend to agree it isn't a bad thing if the caveat of the UK has first 'dibs' rather than the likes of Shell.
Trump is forcing this move towards of some form of energy independence which also includes US energy dependence. |
By:
Shell or any other company isn’t going to build an oil field on the basis that they aren’t getting “first dibs”.
By:
Not much point to this if it isn't for energy security.A few jobs created, money in multinationals pockets and a big black mark on Labours manifesto, tell me why it is a good thing.

Not like we need any extra tax revenue or employment is it.
By:
Massive amounts of tax for us doing nothing and we are very unlikely to end up placing sanctions or an embargo on oil in our own waters resulting in us having to buy from elsewhere.
But yeah as someone from the far left stick to the utopian idea of getting Shell to build an oil field whilst we still expect to get “first dibs” |

£4.6 billion in tax currently, sizeable figure fair enough, maybe double it with extra drilling?
Would it be better to raise income tax by 1p and get £7 billion pa instead of breaking what people voted on in the manifesto? |
By:
No.
By:
I thought the manifesto promised no increase in Income Tax?
By:

By:
Yes Dotch, many i think would prefer that rather than 'drilling' particulary the younger electorate
By:
Probably not the ones who would have to pay them. Its pretty odd to think you can break one manifesto pledge and not another one.
Id also suggest that more would support drilling to raise taxes than an increase in Income Tax. |
By:
Oh and perhaps it could be explained to people who dont want more drilling that the world will still get the oil needed to meet demand and all we are doing is sacrificing tax revenue that could be put to good use while other countries fill any gap in demand.

He's just against absolutely anything and everything that Reform would suggest, RDS.

@ 5.33pm, you are making a v. fair case for and that is a good point.

It costs fortunes to decommission oil and gas fields all paid for by British tax payer, I personally want the industry to boom but ship has sailed.
The money earned is not enough to cover decommissioning. The operator takes profit, you get not much. |
By:
No wonder the far left can’t be left in charge of economics.
‘It’s a good idea as long as someone else will build it and we will get the benefits’ Realise they are talking nonsense. ‘We should tax the workers instead of creating jobs’ Realise they are talking nonsense. |
By:
I was asking, you didn't really give an answer and doing what you do best, hop on after.
By:
Didn’t really give an answer other than massive tax amounts and having a supply never subject to sanctions or embargo’s?
What did you want me to do write it out in crayons for you Lapsy? |
By:
It costs fortunes to decommission oil and gas fields all paid for by British tax payer,
All licences require the licensee to pay for decommission. Are you able to give an example where a licensee hasn’t done so? Do you think green energy have a cost for decommissioning? |
By:
The far left has nothing to do with oil and gas industry in Scotland going downhill.
The Conservative Party were in charge when industry declined. Absolutely dung gets posted on this forum by people who nothing about what they are talking about. |
By:
There does seem to be a certain prevalence from people from a certain country outside of the UK posting about not wanting the UK’s oils and gas energy industry to flourish and have the Russians and Arabs be the ones benefiting from the oil industry.
By:
Green energy is not perfect there is no gain without pain and as stated previously I prefer oil and gas but it’s over.
Thatcher was greatest net zero politician ever in Scotland closing pits and steel works, was she far left ? |
By:
Do a freedom of information request and prove me wrong who is paying for decommissioning, who is paying SEPA costs to oversee it.
By:
Where do far left come in to it other than Lapsys ridiculous idea that an oil company would’t get first dibs for building an oil field?
He’s a typical far leftie who wants something for nothing. It sounds like you can’t answer my questions on decommissioning and are talking nonsense. |
By:
You think that the country that has the oil shouldn't have some say that at least some and maybe even a large part should be if needed be prioritised for the domestic market, really?
By:
It was you that said “far left” retrace your posts Dude, only you know why far left is involved in energy
By:
Energy policy is not right wing or left wing, you can have different views on the subject and back them.
Right wing to myself is keep giving billionaires their share and left is to help people and ensure wealth created is distributed fairly to people who are not billionaires. |
By:
Lapsy they clearly do have a say in granting licences but to suggest that a company like Shell will come in pay for a licence., build the rigs then have have the government still have “first dibs” is lunacy. They won’t do that and you now thankfully are realising that. You now also realise the benefits of having oil fields here rather than just having “first dibs”
Malay: I called Lapsy far left. I am still waiting for you to say which oil field had to be decommissioned by the tax payer. I would actually be genuinely interested about that if it has happened. |
By:
They all have to be because SEPA need to regulate it and they were not formed till 1996. They would not have been involved in licence conditions when given, will they pursue polluters under Ecocide bill ?, I think you are Scottish but I’m not sure but I think if you are you want mega money billionaires to pay, somebody has to clean it.
By:
So it costs the taxpayers fortunes because Separate does it job it was created to do?
You Paddies on here seem to have particular habit of being anti Brexit because it harms the economy and pro Scottish independence but you always seem to take umbrage at things like this that would clearly boost the economy in the UK and Scotland and bring in jobs in Scotland. Rosebank would be a massive boost to future prosperity of Shetland and ensure jobs for future generations. |

I can't be 'far right' SD, they excuse the genocide in Palestine, they do not condone the burning of foreigners out of their homes in the 'UK'. I am left per se and happy with that, not far left.
This is desperation, you are probably looking at circa £4 billion raised but morals out the window(i acknowledge Dotchs point earlier). It won't happen only circumstance dictates, not good.It would pass as national security. |
By:
Where does your 4 billion come from?
Stop being a parody of yourself and bringing up palestine in every conversation you have. |
By:
Currently 4.6 billion raised in tax,i am giving doubling that, what do you think this drilling will raise extra?
I will never ignore genocide and ethnic cleansing, you can excuse gvir, smolrich, nethanyahu, shame on you and that murdering far right |

Andy Burnham will scrap plans for a government-issued digital ID for all British adults when he becomes prime minister on Monday.
The move, which follows plans for new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, will shift focus to "the daily priorities facing people across the country", Burnham's office said. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y08z25q8eo Shovin' it up Kier |
