Correct Sir N. They may not expevt thanks but they do not like hostility. I was a livestock farmer for 30 yeras employing up to 6 people and doing OK until 1995 when a Private members bil forced us to change our business model and then shortly after in 2000 to sell the business. It was clear to me and still is that the general public are hostile to liovestock farming in UK but still happily buy meat from other countries which have far less legislation about welfare and the environment. The pig industry has basically moved out of the country. The dairy industry is teetering on the brink. This is just an example that I know a lot about but every day I read of other small businesses in other industries who are closing. The reason: regulation, Government imposed costs and unfair foreign competition. In the eyes of Labour, if your employees are not members of a Union, you must be a rogue employer.

if you actually look at total UK exports the service sectors have been doing really well including to the EU. The decline in physical exports has been going on for years given the cost of manufacturing in the UK compared to other countries. We have always run a huge structural deficit with the EU on goods and a huge surplus on services.

Starmer is right to concentrate on removing the barriers to trade (like vet certificates on some goods) but if you think rejoining the single market is some silver bullet for growth in the economy you are seriously deluded

I dont think the tax system for business should revolve around catching amazon profits

Increased economic activity will lead to increased profits for these companies but also increase the Govts tax take

I see that as a win win but others have an ideological hatred of big companies making profits

There would probably need to be international co-operation to catch huge multinationals moving their profits around the world which is unlikely to happen

You just need to look at Ireland who have a policy of lower corporation tax than other countries to attract these big multi national head offices

Make it the law that if you sell goods that are delivered in the UK it must be from a UK subsidiary and UK VAT is applicable and the profits will be taxed in the UK.

Wee also need to target business tax evaders with jail time.

I can buy silver vat free if I try hard enough, and UK sites are stuffed.

Can't you just do a point of consumption tax? Worked with the bookies 15 years ago when Gib seemed like a silver bullet. Just apply a flat tax rate to any UK sales from a foreign-based firm.

Also, much more important now where you're seeing increasing numbers of firms shedding workers for cheap AI alternatives. I would personally like a tax aimed at those firms who are simply chucking those workers on to the scrapheap for the state to look after, while gathering ever more profits to hide away. If that's your game then pay an expensive penalty. Let's make it more advantageous for companies to employ humans.

Well, tariffs can be useful if done properly. Not just get in a tizz at something Mark Carney said so you slap an extra 10% on Canadian stuff.


But if foreign firms are undermining British businesses, causing British people to be unemployed and not contributing to the exchequer, maybe someone needs to level the playing field a bit.
