So the problems are that the UK is struggling economically, slow growth, high inflation, high national debt,  cost-of-living crisis, high energy prices and strained public finances.

These issues have resulted in many households struggling to live on their income, even as inflation has eased somewhat from its peak.

A Crucial budget and I cant see her being very popular after it !

Reeve tells Martin Lewis that state pension will
remain tax free over course of this parliament.

So obviously plans to raise allowances, at least for pensioners.

Odd to tell Martin Lewis, and not announce in budget.

It will be curious to see how they deal with that anomaly, if it's true. People who don't have any secondary income aside from the state pension that could be tax at source, but over the tax free threshold.
Report Cider November 28, 2025 12:18 PM GMT
sageform, I assume you are recycling the £2880 annually to get the 'free' cash.
Report sageform November 28, 2025 2:53 PM GMT
I don't take anything other than the State pension to which I am entitled (and every pound above £12570 is taxed) and the £200 cold weather payment to which I am also entitled but so far is not taxed. The point I was making was that HMRC take nearly half of my private pension now and will take ALL OF IT, yes 100% if my state pension reaches a high enough figure which it might within 4 years if the inflation rate stays around 4%. All because they are too cowardly to admit that they are imposing tax on a State Benefit. They should be honest about it and take tax from the State Pension and just the basic 20% from my private income.
Report sageform November 28, 2025 2:57 PM GMT
Not sure what you mean by free cash Cider unless you mean the tax free income and dividend allowances. This again is something everyone is entitled to. I also make quite a lot of income from ISAs but yet again everyone can do that.
Report Cider November 28, 2025 3:07 PM GMT
Up to age 75 you can put in up to £2880 into a pension to get tax relief, even if you have no earned income. So, effectively a 'free' £720 annually. Sorry if you have already passed that age!
Report unitedbiscuits November 28, 2025 3:37 PM GMT
Again, though, that's a "benefit" paid to those who have a spare £2880. The poorest don't live like that.

I would have every penny of pension tax-relief paid back to HMRC before anyone could claim state-pension and even that would be a good deal for the individual.

I've been both and it's definitely easier to get richer when you're rich.

Of course I agree that everyone has an obligation to do the best for themselves and family - we're on a betting exchange after all, therefore I want your money!

But I'm a bit nonplussed why investors are complaining about this budget, or the last one; someone who earns £20,000pa in unprotected share dividends is to pay £400 more. So what?

Is it just that you are unhappy because your newsfeed tells you you should be? Be careful what you wish for when you attack Rachel Reeves:- the country voted in 2024 for less inequality; if she is replaced in 25/26 it could well be by someone red in tooth and claw.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will give his backing to the chancellor's Budget in a speech on Monday, and commit the government to going "further and faster" on pro-growth measures.

He will say Chancellor Rachel Reeves's statement will help to alleviate cost of living pressures, lower inflation and ensure economic stability.

It comes as the Treasury faces questions over whether it was transparent about the state of the public finances in the run-up to the Budget.

The Conservatives claimed Reeves misled the public by being too pessimistic about the economic outlook when official forecasts painted a more upbeat picture.

No 10 has denied that Reeves misled voters and defended her statement.

Despite the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) downgrading growth from next year, the prime minister will argue that "economic growth is beating forecasts", but the government must do more to encourage it.

Report Cider November 30, 2025 9:14 PM GMT

He said the PM had been calling out policies "that would line people up who have a right to be in this country, who might be Indian, who might be Nigerian, and send them home".

He added: "It's not British. It doesn't respect our values.

"I'm not going to play the man. I'm playing the ball, as our leader did.

"I will leave it for the public to come to their own judgements about someone who once flirted with Hitler Youth when he was younger."

Shortly after making the comments, Lammy said he was "happy to clarify" them, in an interview with the BBC News Channel.

"He [Farage] has denied it and so I accept that he has denied it and I would like to clarify that position because in the end the prime minister is keen for us to focus on the policies not the individuals."

The deputy prime minister added: "I wasn't at school with Nigel Farage. I don't know what songs he sang at school.

"I'm happy to clarify. I did say it's for the public to make up their mind and I did also emphasise that let us play the ball, not the man Laugh ."

On a £71,000 salary, your take home pay will be £51,737.40 after tax and National Insurance. This equates to £4,311.45 per month and £994.95 per week. If you work 5 days per week, this is £198.99 per day, or £24.87 per hour at 40 hours per week.

(plus they still keep 50% of their child benefit)

What is the maximum UC + Child Benefit for a family with 3 children?

AI Overview

The maximum monthly Universal Credit (UC) amount for a family with three children, including the standard allowance and child elements, is £2,701.29, assuming both children were born after April 6, 2017. This is calculated as:

Standard monthly allowance: £578.84 (single claimant) or £915.43 (couple)
Child element: £292.81 x 3 (for the three children)
Total = £578.84 + (£292.81 x 3) = £1,457.27 (for a single claimant)
Total = £915.43 + (£292.81 x 3) = £1,854.04 (for a couple)
For child benefit, the maximum monthly amount is £58.30, with £26.05 for the first child and £17.25 for each of the other two.

Important Note: The two-child limit for Universal Credit is being removed from April 2026. After this date, families will be able to claim the child element for all children, regardless of their birth date.

Report Escapee December 2, 2025 6:00 PM GMT

think about it this way JTG

Labour have been in power 18 months
how much have they put benefits up for a family with 3 children?
40k? 30k?
I doubt it's even as much as £10k, probably less than £5k

how much do CSJ say this family with 3 children were getting under the tories 18 months ago?

Aside from benefits, which are only going one way and now claimed by a staggering number of people. I dont know the exact breakdown but 9 million of working age are not doing any. Since 2019 1.2 million more have claimed disability benefits. Thats quite a number

its the bollox about growth investment and innovation thats so way out

The previous bodgeit was supposed to do all the necessary groundwork for growth. It didnt. This one has made things worse again

Everyone I know says she has made their life more difficult. One of them ,a small but succesSful publican has now abandoned plans to buy 2 pubs that will probably end up as flats. Constant rises in cost have made it just about viable, he says, from being a good idea. but viable isnt what he wants. His investors wont put the money up

Repeat countrywide and its a calamity

But no tax on bingo. bingo! its the same random number game as all the others. Just shows how illiterate and wrong-headed these idots are

You cant tax your way to growth

Tax thresholds are just delaying the inevitable but its a sneaky way of silently taking money via inflation
