Protests are as pointless as trying to nail jelly to wall.

I agree.

Ghandi did peacefully it by "Showing them the error of their ways", symbols are much more powerful than an unorganised crowd.

Take the plasticine action group protest a couple of weeks back where 800 middle england grannies got arrested en masse for their principles, TV scenes of struggling protesters resisting arrest. Seen so often... zero impact

Ghandi would have organised it differently

same 5,000 or what ever people all with blank placards standing silently....
One person steps forward to the police, writes the offending message on their placard, Stands there gets arrested is very very cooperative, crowd claps or boos or does something polite in unison.
Wait 30 seconds, rinse and repeat.

You've got them by the goolies, only 1 person is breaking the law at any time.
(Of course if we leave the ECHR, then they can do mass arrests for carrying a blank placard, so you'd then have to think of something else)

Do that live on social media, you've got enough people there to string it out for 8 hours, people would flock to it just to have a go, it would go on for weeks.

“Officers are continuing to face aggression in multiple locations, in particular at the north of Whitehall as they work to create a safe exit route for those who have been taking part in the Stand Up To Racism protest,” the force said.

The facts of the matter were that for some unknown reason the police decided to allow the two protests to meet, quite what would be achieved by such an action is lost on everyone.
No a single person from either party would have considered a single aspect of either protest, and the reality was the police wernt prepared for such a large gathering of patriots who dwarfed the anti-protest, protest.
They had to create a ‘sterile’ zone as a result of bringing the two groups together, considering the UTK rally was too large to get everyone in Whitehall, then this was a failure.
Giving the anti protest protest a safe route in and out was a luxury they didn’t have leading to the inevitable clashes.
