Did the pub really have any choice? The staff threatened not to turn up.

In June, The Bull was crowned the best pub in the UK by industry leading publication Pub & Bar Magazine in its annual awards.

So seems unlikely they are desperate for bookings , he was taking over the whole pub with security. The staff probably don’t like his political views but they also might be pis ed off with the disruption in the area with police closing roads etc.
What else could the pub do?
Report brentford August 16, 2025 4:23 PM BST
I'd always assumed a landlord could refuse anyone they want but actually a bit more nuanced than that.

As a licensee you do have the right to refuse entry to whomever you wish, however the reasons for any refusal must not be unlawful.

For instance equality legislation makes it unlawful to refuse entry on the grounds of race, religion, sex or sexual orientation and disability amongst other things. At the same time, however, every licensee has a duty to promote the licensing objectives and if allowing a customer or customers to enter the premises would undermine those objectives then it would be lawful to refuse entry.

If, for example, the reason for refusal is that the individual is a known troublemaker then the refusal would usually be lawful. If you have had to expel them previously from your premises or they are banned by Pubwatch, for previous violent behaviour, then this could be a lawful refusal.

It is when there is either outright discrimination or stereotyping of classes of people that discrimination occurs which is unlawful. You cannot bar someone simply on the basis that you think they are a traveller. A good practice tip when contentious refusals are made is to note the specific reasons in a refusals log justifying refusal, for instance on the grounds of prevention of crime and disorder. Training your staff is also important

as Mex' says there may have been other practical factors in play..can't imagine he'll be contesting it..

It might be best to chat to the staff before guessing at their reasons.
The whole area has had disruptions because of police and US security. There is a Bull didn’t really have much choice if the staff wouldn’t turn up. They run a business 365 days a year , including very expensive rooms. They need staff to work for low pay & they are in the middle of nowhere. Why risk a very successful business for one lunch.

But if that is the case then they should all be sacked. But of course the owners no doubt share their views.

Who will replace all the staff you are sacking? It is a successful expensive pub/hotel/restaurant with a multi million pound turnover .
Does your business plan just involve getting rid of staff or do you have a plan about staff for the weekend when every table is booked?

The staff could be “sick” so difficult to legally get rid of. Some could be on zero hour contracts, they work well for the company but occasionally can be used by staff not to work.

Even if the owners like JD they have a 365 day a year business to run which relies on staff. The pub is in the middle of nowhere, where are you getting the replacements from after you sack the staff.

The bakers eventually won the cake case because of what the product was not the person who order it.

They claimed that if the same person wanted a cake with Happy Birthday they would have served him & if a heterosexual person wanted the support gay marriage message they would have refused.

JD Vance is unlikely to take this to court. If he comes back in 5 years with fewer security staff he is likely to be served. If the pub had no staff they could hardly serve JD. Witney might be back to having a Tory MP by then.

Until recently our record at Elland Road was hopeless, when Wayne Rooney scored the winner there in 2003 in was our first league win there since 1952 Surprised
So a draw would be a decent start to the season i think as a couple of defenders are likely to be missing, Branthwaite definitely out and Patterson and Mykolenko doubtful. Also the new signings such as Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall will need time to settle in. Leeds will be well up for it which really goes without saying. Sunderlands result today being a case in point, not easy playing these newly promoted sides away first up.

First we are generally getting information from the Daily Fail. Secondly the Landlord has the right to refuse to serve. Pretty sure he doesn’t have to give a reason but if he gives the reason or at worst make one up that has grounds like affecting goodwill of my regular customers. If staff on zero hours contracts and minimum wage do not want to work any particular day then that is their business.

Not really sure why people are getting their knickers in a twist over this after the way Vance ambushed Zelensky. I also think he has more food options than the children of Gaza so if mainly young people do not want  to serve a collaborator of Terrorist’s, deliberate starvation of children and Genocide and their boss accepts their decision shirley it is up to them?

a) HB payment goes straight to the Landlord
b) The tenant receives the HB

Generally the HB does not cover the entire cost of the rent and the extra will come from the JSA payment for example. The Universal payment will be an all in one payment directly to the tenant. So if Crippen has any addicts in his rooms then he will have to whistle Dixie.

WD, there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding as to how the law applies regarding refusal of service, here is a leading solicitors summation :

The right to refuse service
UK law states that you can refuse service to a customer or client so long as you have a legitimate reason. This reason has to be applied fairly and consistently across the board.

This is to avoid cases where service is refused because the business just doesn’t like the look of somebody, or because they have a protected characteristic like gender, sexuality or race.

Common reasons to refuse service include aggressive behaviour, intoxication, threats to the safety of staff or customers, and non-compliance with a dress code.

From a legal point of view, the most important thing to note is that these are all legitimate reasons so long as the business has made its expectations clear.

A nightclub, for instance, can operate a “no jeans” policy – but it has to be across the board. If you make an exception for one denim-wearer, you could be accused of unfair refusal.

Similarly, the coffee stall in Norwich that made the news in 2012 for refusing to serve people who were on their phones was well within its rights. But if it had made an exception it could hypothetically have been accused of discrimination.
Clear expectations, then, are paramount – and so is the need to keep a record of incidents.
