It's dangerous to speculate without knowing all the facts. Could it be that Vance was already the worse for strong drink?

Did the pub really have any choice? The staff threatened not to turn up. In June, The Bull was crowned the best pub in the UK by industry leading publication Pub & Bar Magazine in its annual awards. So seems unlikely they are desperate for bookings , he was taking over the whole pub with security. The staff probably don’t like his political views but they also might be pis ed off with the disruption in the area with police closing roads etc. What else could the pub do? |

I'd always assumed a landlord could refuse anyone they want but actually a bit more nuanced than that.
As a licensee you do have the right to refuse entry to whomever you wish, however the reasons for any refusal must not be unlawful. For instance equality legislation makes it unlawful to refuse entry on the grounds of race, religion, sex or sexual orientation and disability amongst other things. At the same time, however, every licensee has a duty to promote the licensing objectives and if allowing a customer or customers to enter the premises would undermine those objectives then it would be lawful to refuse entry. If, for example, the reason for refusal is that the individual is a known troublemaker then the refusal would usually be lawful. If you have had to expel them previously from your premises or they are banned by Pubwatch, for previous violent behaviour, then this could be a lawful refusal. It is when there is either outright discrimination or stereotyping of classes of people that discrimination occurs which is unlawful. You cannot bar someone simply on the basis that you think they are a traveller. A good practice tip when contentious refusals are made is to note the specific reasons in a refusals log justifying refusal, for instance on the grounds of prevention of crime and disorder. Training your staff is also important as Mex' says there may have been other practical factors in play..can't imagine he'll be contesting it.. |

The pub seems to be popular.
Can’t get a table for two between 6pm&9.30 tonight or before 7.15pm tomorrow. Not exactly the cheapest pub food, so suggest it is pretty good. Tempted to visit this year. |

Staff choosing who they serve ? They must have taken a Booking otherwise how would the staff know who was coming

It might be best to chat to the staff before guessing at their reasons. The whole area has had disruptions because of police and US security. There is a Bull didn’t really have much choice if the staff wouldn’t turn up. They run a business 365 days a year , including very expensive rooms. They need staff to work for low pay & they are in the middle of nowhere. Why risk a very successful business for one lunch. There is a Spoons nearby at Witney, He could have gone there and enjoyed a few pints of Stellar |

I wouldnt bother to cross the road to visit the Bull. Much rather stay in the Rose and Crown which is one of the best real ale pubs around.

Why couldn't Vance have gone to an off license and got a few carry outs?

Pubs can refuse admission to anybody they want, I'm sure most have a legal statement posted in foyer on this process. Why anybody is annoyed about this is bizarre ? I'm sure plenty more pubs he could go to in locality, he would probably be staying in nice hotel with a bar, why not drink there and keep head down ?
Story about nothing was it in express or some you tube dung, x ? |

What are you on about Blakey ? I think it's you that must have had one too many Tributes.
We don't know for definite if J D and co had actually booked and if so that the staff refused to work. But if that is the case then they should all be sacked. But of course the owners no doubt share their views. Nobody should be refused service in a pub, restaurant etc just because of their politics, be that left, right or in between. Why is it always lefties that are so intolerant ? You don't hear much of this kind of thing emanating from the right do you? |
|
By:
Dixie maybe not worth the hassle, in fairness if he said he was going to spend 20 bags and he would put it upfront, I'd let him in regardless of politics.
|
|
By:
I hope the owner had a spare room to set up as a safe space like the managers did at Summerhall recently. Poor staff must have been terrified.
|
|
By:
Possibly refused service because of his association with rapists and child sex traffickers

Who will replace all the staff you are sacking? It is a successful expensive pub/hotel/restaurant with a multi million pound turnover . Does your business plan just involve getting rid of staff or do you have a plan about staff for the weekend when every table is booked? The staff could be “sick” so difficult to legally get rid of. Some could be on zero hour contracts, they work well for the company but occasionally can be used by staff not to work. Even if the owners like JD they have a 365 day a year business to run which relies on staff. The pub is in the middle of nowhere, where are you getting the replacements from after you sack the staff. |

Every business should have the right to refuse to serve anyone at all.

By:
It's like that Belfast baker cake scenario or the one in the West Country where the owners refused a couple because of the owners Christian beliefs. It should be the right of the business owner to refuse.

Definitely I'm sure all pubs have legal declaration on this, this story is a load of rubbish, usual betfair right wing politics forum dung, which is posted 100 times a week, Betfair need to close this politics forum and not provide the platform if they want to comply with their CSR policy. |

If they’re setting the bar at Vance then it should be pretty easy to bankrupt them with regular bookings from people they hate

The bakers eventually won the cake case because of what the product was not the person who order it. They claimed that if the same person wanted a cake with Happy Birthday they would have served him & if a heterosexual person wanted the support gay marriage message they would have refused. JD Vance is unlikely to take this to court. If he comes back in 5 years with fewer security staff he is likely to be served. If the pub had no staff they could hardly serve JD. Witney might be back to having a Tory MP by then. |

A well known and popular local footballer wanted
to book a meal in local restaurant/pub. Deal was 6 tables and close rest of restaurant as he wanted privacy for his party. Close off entrance to bar. Restaurant/pub declined his offer, he wasn't happy but they didn't want to let folk down. Social media influencers will try owt for a free meal too. Why did Vance pick their pub? Recommendation, certainly not from Jeremy Clarkson who he refused to meet. Maybe they all like Clarkson. Maybe it was Kamala Harris that told him how much she enjoyed her meal there. Who nose |

Ironically it’s probably the kind of establishment that would have no problem with Vance using the female toilets.

Was it in the same village where the whole place was closed down by Vance's Security people? The locals are seething about the disruption to their lives caused by the usual US over the top security with dozens of black windowed armoured vehicles closing roads and parks.
|
|
By:
yak hunt/ malay - maybe familiarise yourself with the law. In this instance if Vance is refused the booking because of his politics, then the only possible defence the pub/restaurant could have is if they quizzed every other potential customer on their political leanings/beliefs as well. And this policy would have to be made clear by the business in question. However even then if challenged legally, Vance could potentially claim his political beliefs are a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.

True the Cotswolds are traditionally a quiet tranquil place during August. |

Dixie why are you so bothered about a pub you probably have never been in deciding who they want to serve ? I know Everton had no match today but surely you have more interesting things in you're life than this guy vance, who i actually know very little about myself in fairness. He's american ? a foreigner ? I assume. If the publican can identify a potential problem for his business he can refuse entry via readily available info, he is not the FBI and doesn't need to have assessed every prospective customer in depth, that would be seriously woke law. Do you not agree or are you woke ? . |

Eve Jobs (the late Steve's daughter) had a lavish wedding a couple of weeks back, just a couple of miles up the road from Charlbury.
There was similar disruption due to security cordons etc as for the Vance visit. Clarkson wasn't happy about that either. The woke lefties and liberals darling Kamala Harris was an honoured guest and reportedly dined at The Bull with her entourage. Plenty of double standards on show all round (as ever). YHTL - as far as i can see Vance isn't the one making a story out of this, its locals who spread the rumours. I doubt he'd lose any sleep over missing his lunch. |

Malay, it's a discussion forum.
I am debating this issue and the law around it. I could just as easily question why you are so bothered about me being bothered ![]() It wouldn't matter if it was Vance, Starmer or Sturgeon, it's about what is right and fair. You do not have to be woke to be concerned about blatant discrimination. |
|
By:
You have to be a right winger to be bothered
And keep using language such as woke lefties and liberals About what appears a simple decision to avoid disruption. |
|
By:
The limp lefties will be happy to make this the big story of JD Vance’s visit.
Otherwise it would be about perpetual idiot David ‘Mastermind’ Lammy breaking the law with him. Law breakers shouldn’t be lawmakers. |
|
By:
Pot and Kettle alert YHTL - you keep using language like right wing whingers.
If it was that much of a simple decision then why didn't they make it for the Jobs Wedding and Harris visit then ? |
|
By:
Dixie I take you're point on why I am interested, (I shouldn't be, totally agreed) and that is valid. However I just stumbled across the thread and know nothing about the situation apart from the posts on here, but I'm sure you would agree, you would as a business be more concerned with you're regular stakeholders concerns, (employees and established customers base) than a one off visitor (unless he gave me that 20 bags)
![]() Off topic, what you think Monday, a few draws today, Sunderland getting win, any Everton updates players available, confidence ? |
