Spain protesting this weekend against the surge in tourism that is being blamed for plummeting living standards among the local population.

unprecedented numbers of visitors pricing locals out of the housing market, they are also using up public spaces, public services and natural resources.

Pere started his activism five years ago as part of Greta Thunberg’s climate movement, but his focus has shifted to the cost of living for his fellow islanders.

“Businesses are changing from one's selling traditional products to multi-nationals selling ice cream and we are losing our identity. We want to preserve our culture," he says.

...........now then where have I seen that statement before ?

Though of course not everything that comes from the outside and significantly influences a country's culture is abysmal like Christianity.Like beer. Beer is awesome. Can you imagine if people had been all "THIS IS OUR CULTURE! WE NEED TO PRESERVE"
Report irishone July 22, 2024 6:38 AM BST
This year it feels like something has changed. The anger among many locals is reaching a new level - notably demonstrated in Barcelona recently when visitors were drenched with water pistols.

Has importing millions here, paying many of their expenses, improved our living standards? At least tourists pour
their own money into the local economy and then bugger off home.

Thought it would be all the Brits fault according to oirish
The only people I know who go to Spain are either boorish proletariat lower class or criminals.
You get what you build.
The place should understand its own history and learn from it, the whole country fell inside 4 years in the 8thC due to locals opening the gates to outsiders, and they didn’t get it back for hundreds of years.
Who in this day and age are going to go to the lengths of Isabella and drive out the foreigners this time?
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 22, 2024 3:13 PM BST
It's the same story as happens here in Cornwall and the Lake District.

It's the age old problem of trying to put a leash on capitalism. Everyone cheers at the tourism it brings, the money people spend there. But capitalism doesn't respect boundaries. Capitalism demands minimum wage workers even if it has to import them from elsewhere instead of locals, it destroys local less-powerful competitors and the wealthy dominate the weak and buy up all the property for their hols and for airbnb profits at other times, driving up prices for local kids trying to get on the ladder.

Suddenly the same people cheering for capitalism thirty years ago are wondering why it's turned on them.

Between the last two censuses (held in 2011 and 2021), the population of Cornwall increased by 7.1%, from just under 532,300 in 2011 to around 570,300 in 2021.

The population here increased by a smaller percentage than the overall population of the South West (7.8%), but at a higher rate to the overall population of England (up 6.6% since the 2011 Census).

Eh?

I'm simply pointing out what has been and is happening. Tourism is great until there are some negative consequences. We all want the good bits. We all want the money. But then Airbnb comes along and those with cash are hoovering up flats to rent out and venture capitalists are forcing small local businesses out of the market, and all of a sudden those benefitting from tourism are fewer and fewer, and often not local at all. Meanwhile, those left there are scratching their heads and wondering where there promised riches evaporated to.
Report Cider July 22, 2024 4:14 PM BST
you're blaming capitalism. so I'm asking what alternative system you're proposing that would prevent people going on holiday or moving to desirable areas to live ?
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 22, 2024 4:16 PM BST
And, yeah, London is the same thing. But always been that way so it's accepted more easily. But I was pointing out that Spain et al are experiencing what our tourist spots have also been having. The capital has the best paid jobs and so is a huge magnet. You get the talent drain from the north and from small towns where your masters degree can only take you so far. But down there the streets are paved with gold. Come to London and live in this 7 sq m flat for £50k!

It's called unfettered capitalism where no one bothered to regulate the market, believing the bull that the market always finds its natura level and maybe they can be the ones to tame the beast so that it works in harmony with their society. One day humans may learn.
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 22, 2024 4:18 PM BST
and donny - that Cornwall population increase is all from older people. Nearly all groups of younger people have decreased. It's simply wealthy retirees moving out there for the good life. All brilliant for the local economy and everything - until they realise local young people are increasingly priced out and are moving away for a better life.
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 22, 2024 4:19 PM BST
I'm blaming unfettered capitalism.

My alternative is simply much more heavily restricted capitalism where the needs of the community are balanced against the desires of the market.
Report Cider July 22, 2024 4:23 PM BST
mass immigration is not leaving it to the market, it's the complete opposite. which is why the country is now fecked.

heavily restricted capitalism where the needs of the community are balanced against the desires of the market.

you need to define that in practice. when i finish up 'working' I'll have the means to live anywhere in the country. so if i wanted to live in Cornwall, how would your system prevent that?
Report Cider July 22, 2024 4:25 PM BST
I do fancy living near the coast, so it's not impossible either! but that could change over the next decade.

Pretty much how I saw it too.

There are a few places in north East where people retire to.

This causes havoc amongst locals, and forces unwelcome moves
when setting up. Helping drive youth exodus to bigger
towns and cities...
