released EARLY from a 6 month sentence for pulling a blade on a ticket inspector, now back on remand waiting for sentencing after nearly killing another guy , yet again on a train. Can guarantee it will be another pathetic sentence.

Surprised you haven't mentioned the horrific killing of Cody Fisher, a thoroughly evil murder.

You see endless pontification about how to solve knife crime. The answer tho is blindingly obvious. Anyone found in public possessing an offensive weapon on their person or in their car is given 5 years in the slammer. No if, buts, maybes, allowances, judicial discretion, time off for good behaviour. 5 years. There ends the vast majority of knife crime.

They can get four years now. What you propose wouldn't do a thing to end knife crime.

Of course it would. What they can  be given is not relevant if they are never given it. There are endless reports of repeat offenders caught with a knife simply let off. It's absurd. The discretion should be removed once the offense is confirmed. Of course you'll get the counter argument from the apologists that there aren't even prison places, but once it was demonstrated that any offender actually got 5 years with no loopholes, then offenses would plummet. Not completely, as you still get people willing to risk carrying a gun, but they are a very small number.

That's just your opinion, do you have any knowledge that backs it up?
By:

Name a crime that is as common as knife possession that carries a minimum tariff of 7.5 years. You do not need some kind of extensive specialist knowledge to know that if perpetrators of certain crimes are effectively let off then they will continue to be perpetrators of said crime.

In any case, whatever we are doing now is obviously not working, is it. So radical action is needed.

A long prison sentence is meant to be the deterrent now. The judges (for whatever reason) choose to avoid the application of the deterrent.

Can you give me a source that says increasing sentences deters crime?

I doubt there are any recent examples where completed sentences have been radically increased for the same offence. Whilst some legislation may now allow significantly longer sentences, they aren't actually applied.

The Beatles made their first appearance in
America during the Ed Sullivan show 1964
72 million people watched - and remarkably
there was no crime in America during that appearance
( according to Philip Norman rock music author on GB news now )

How about all offences, any evidence that increasing sentences deters crime?

How can you evidence something that hasn't been done. You can't. The vast majority of people aren't going to leave their house with a zombie knife are they. It's not like, for example a driving offence or pub fight where people did not always set out to commit a crime. It's a premeditated offence. Plus in my view anyway, one that deserves 5 years as there is no conceivable valid reason to do it.

That's easy for a leftie. They live in a world of fantasy.

Go back to the 1940s and 50s, there was far less crime then compared to now. So what were they doing then that's different to what we're doing now?

Yet you seem convinced that giving five years sentences is correct. Where does your logic come from?

Harsher sentencing as the answer to anything. Nothing whatsoever to do with diverting youngsters from carrying knives in the first place. Just harsher punishment. Cos history tells us that's always worked.

well it worked in Glasgow when the razor/knife gangs were running amok in the 50s and 60s
a different time maybe but up to 10 years for just using a knife seemed to do the trick,
when I was growing up in the 70s the local nutter might have had a flicknife but
it was just for bravado really, now it seems a lot of youths have them and are prepared to use them
with deadly consequences, by all means try and dissuade youths from carrying knives but if there
was a stiffer deterrent for just carrying maybe quite a few would think twice?

If you think a prison sentence is going to stop these kind of savages then I belive you are deluded to the current situation. It is very very bad and getting considerably worse by the day.

Didn't say it would stop it, but would end most of it. As the stock response to why they are carrying a weapon is self defence. You cannot tell me that knowing you will do 5 years and not let off with the proverbial slap on the wrist won't stop the majority of them walking around with a knife. It would once they saw people were actually doing 5 years for it.

It deserves 5 years ANYWAY. You would expect to go straight to prison if you were stopped with a sawn off shot gun, why should a bl00dy sword be different.
