the mRNA vaccines (specifically those manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna) are
perceived to be even more effective than AstraZeneca. And, the vaccine’s
reputation took a hit when some people who received this vaccine subsequently
developed blood clots.
The UK and many other high-income countries are likely to continue predominantly
using mRNA COVID vaccines. However, much of the knowledge we have around “which
vaccine is better” relates to previous variants rather than omicron. As the virus
continues to evolve, so must the evidence base.

Other jabs were better and safer. Tories set the remit of the inquiry. Would have been interesting to have this in the scope and discover how much they rushed to accept this as a benefit of no longer being in the EU. Cos I'd bet my mortgage on that being the case.
Report edy December 19, 2023 9:26 AM GMT
EU countries primarily really identified the problems with the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine because they vaccinated a different population with it. There will have been some differences between the countries, but in general the old people got Biontech and Moderna as that was deemed the high priority group that the higher efficacy vaccine was reserved for. In Germany's case it was also opened up to different sub groups over time. Don't recall the exact groups and won't look it up, it was something like first two weeks of the vaccination campaign - reserved for 80+, after those two weeks, the 70+ old people became eligible for Biontech and Moderna and so on.

AstraZeneca was viewed as quite rubbish for older people at least in Germany and France already before the severe complications came to light. I remember the German Vaccination Commission not advising it for older people at its introduction and the French also called it so-so effective for older folk. I also remmember that being rubbished on here as Brexit jealousy by Germany and France to criticise the UK product, but I guess that's just a side-note here.

Either way, those circumstances left Oxford/AstraZeneca basically for those that didn't want to wait until their age group was opened up for the mRNA vaccines and those where highest efficacy was deemed less important. So the percentage of younger people, younger women, i.e. the group where the potentially deadly thrombose complications were most common, out of total total Oxford/AstraZeneca recipients was a whole lot higher in the EU than it was in the UK. I.e. the problem was more visible.

An experimental drug? What a load of baloney! The vaccine was fast-tracked ie bringing conception to production period from 10 years to just a few months; many trials were conducted and expedited. These were necessary given the huge number of deaths due to Covid - needs must. Otherwise significantly more people would have died.

Some are still ungrateful despite the UK was one of the earliest countries with the vaccine; the UK allowed the rest of the world to have AZ at cost or free.

As always, UK knockers aplenty.

Oh, and with ULEZ in place the London lungs are less vulnerable to viruses that inhibit the respiratory system. Air pollution levels and chronic exposure to it, which causes damage, are very likely correlated with the harm a respiratory virus does to people.

The air pollution thing was primarily a tongue in cheek thing because people love to get energetic about ULEZ (as you coincidentally also show in enegertically picking that one up over the others). In general, people not knowing that their own respiratory system is in worse shape due to chronic exposure due to air pollution than it would be in life of fresh sea resort air does not mean the damage doesn't exist and that air pollution is not detrimental to one's health and respiratory system.

See e.g.

Because people know and care now. Smoking is a bigger health concern than in times gone by even though people smoke less.

Again, it was more of a tongue in cheek comment. Not entirely without reason and basis though. Right from the start of covid there were suggestions that air quality played a role in the severity of the disease, with later analysis suggesting that indeed there might indeed be something to it.

See e.g.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0013935120313566

Again though, the ULEZ thing was a tongue in cheek throwaway comment. What's of much more interest is:

I don't think the vaccine gave long lasting protection.
Report edy December 20, 2023 10:32 PM GMT
While direct availability of fitting, but short-lasting, antibodies is an important part of a vaccine's function in preventing or reducing illness and was very much in focus for a while due to its longevity, or lack thereof, it isn't everything. Many vaccines, including the ones prevalent fpr SARS-CoV-2, also elicit a response in other aspects of the immune system, like t-cells, and hence prime people for a (much) longer time and a broader spectrum of similar viruses than antibodies do.

Quite similarly to how an infection is not going to cause you to have antibodies forever and ever after, but your immune system still being (somewhat) prepared nonetheless because of those other, longer-lasting aspects of your immune system that were prepared through those infections.

chocolate and teapots come to mind
Report edy December 20, 2023 11:24 PM GMT
Basically, when your body encounters a virus for the very first time it is usually slower to react than if it has encountered that virus or a similar one before. We learn to recognise and response as we become exposed, whether it be infection or vaccination.

That's how infection with covid and also vaccination help provide protection that lasts long beyond direct immunity through the direct availability of antibodies. Note how I specifically wrote about "long-lasting base resistance through vaccinations and prior infections", saddo. Nothing that prevents infection, but something that nonethless helps the body out in handling an infection later one.

As we grow older, our body will often slow down a bit in that recognition and will often also be more specific. I.e. if a 100 year old and a 50 year old know the same base virus and they then meet the same mutated version of it, the younger body is more likely to recognise the mutated version as something it knows and should react to.

This kinda thing is why, especially in cold/flu season, it then becomes advised again for especially at-risk and immunosuppressed people to

a) make the body have a more direct response at the ready (antibodies) in the season where infection is most likely
b) refresh the memory with an updated version of the virus so that the version the body knows from back whenever and the version the body is bound to encounter in the wild aren't too mutated and different to be recognised
