So we let foreign companies extract the oil and gas under our soil, and then sell it on the open market to Europe.

Yay.

We really are taking back control.

Until we actually renationalise our energy and ensure we make decisions for this country's benefit over foreign capitalists then all we're doing is giving our stuff away.
Report haywarj July 31, 2023 10:35 AM BST
This gov have lost the plot
Report Foinavon July 31, 2023 10:41 AM BST
That's a simplistic way of viewing it. Crude oil is not all the same and is moved around to refineries that need or can handle it. The refined products are then sold to where they are used. There are such things as jobs, tax and forex. As for the gas, it is piped ashore here.
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 31, 2023 10:54 AM BST
There's lots of jobs in wind and solar too. Lots of jobs in supermarkets and care homes. I mean, if the only good point is more jobs then fair enough.

But I'd have thought after the last couple of years, energy independence and security would be a bit of a priority. As long as British people are happy giving away our energy resources to foreign companies to profit from then the tories will just keep doing it I suppose. Meanwhile we continue to be beholden to the whims of the Russians and Saudis.

Taking back control.

We've had oil for 50 years, where's all the wealth that comes with being an oil producing nation?

Norway shared our oil journey, gets 78p per £ of revenue, abolished income tax and set up a sovereign wealth fund. UK gets 56p per £ of oil revenue and it's citizens are burdened with the highest tax take since WW2.

all our wealth is being siphoned off to tax havens.
Report lfc1971 July 31, 2023 11:33 AM BST

Sunak would sell his wife and children, but would
likely sell them to a tory donor, dealer who would sell them
on to highest bidder.

He could then rent them back at £60k an hour
having them helicoptered in as required.

Only the left would attempt to compare a small one trick pony like Norway with the UK.
When Norway funds almost everything from natural resources.

It's noticable that Norway are not in the EU.
Report Foinavon July 31, 2023 2:51 PM BST
Much of our electricity and space heating are derived from natural gas. It makes more sense to pipe it in from our own wells than import LNG which generates far more CO2 per unit of useful energy as it has to be liquified and transported by sea. Better the taxes go to the exchequer than to regimes like the Qatari one. What does it matter if our crude oil is refined in Rotterdam and then sent back to us, we don't have the refinery capacity here. Much of our diesel fuel comes from Russia, perhaps the no-drilling brigade thinks that's a good idea.
Report Foinavon July 31, 2023 3:03 PM BST
There's lots of jobs in wind and solar too. Lots of jobs in supermarkets and care homes. I mean, if the only good point is more jobs then fair enough.

How much foreign exchange do those activities generate? We have to buy dollars to buy in oil and if we can't generate the forex by sales then we either borrow the money or sell off assets. We can't survive by selling each other cups of latte and wiping backsides.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- July 31, 2023 3:18 PM BST
Much of "our" oil doesn't work in our refineries
so we don't refine our refineries to develop
it and produce end product that would give
more jobs and earn more dollars.

We've just sold most oil /gas to companies
that make as much profit as they can and try
not to pay tax on profits.

The ministers will find way on to boards in
due course where renumeration is high and
actual work put in is low.

Hey, but they've earned it.

Even Grayling gets gravy.
Report PorcupineorPineapple July 31, 2023 3:41 PM BST
But there's no commitment in this announcement to keep the gas and oil here. It won't make energy cheaper. It won't bring energy security into our hands.

The only thing it'll do is make a few petrochemical companies even richer than they were before.

What's the point?
Report Foinavon July 31, 2023 3:47 PM BST
As I have already pointed out, jobs, taxes, forex. Better to use gas piped from the North sea than to import LNG by tanker.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- July 31, 2023 3:48 PM BST
Do they buy the licences in dollars or pounds

do they pay taxes in dollars or pounds.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- July 31, 2023 3:53 PM BST
The oil companies would be happy to
rescue every profitable drop from north sea

But they don't sell it to us at fixed price
for benefit of all uk consumers of energy.
They punt it on to whoever wants it, at
best price they can, for them.

They don't build refineries near where
product is produced as they can sell
to those that already have refineries
and if uk crude is shipped half way
round the world, well, that doesn't matter.

But the issue of Climate change is not where the oil and gas comes from, it is whether or not we use any at all. Why is it seen as OK to import gas from Russia or USA and oil from Saudi when we can produce more ourselves until we can manage without any? Using imported fossil fuel is a double whammy.
Report PorcupineorPineapple August 3, 2023 1:00 PM BST
Indeed.

But our fuel is run on a capitalist basis. It's bought and sold on the open market. If we actually want to use our own oil and gas then we need to be the people selling it as well as buying.
