Cue outrage from JSO nutters.

So we let foreign companies extract the oil and gas under our soil, and then sell it on the open market to Europe.
Yay. We really are taking back control. Until we actually renationalise our energy and ensure we make decisions for this country's benefit over foreign capitalists then all we're doing is giving our stuff away. |

This gov have lost the plot

That's a simplistic way of viewing it. Crude oil is not all the same and is moved around to refineries that need or can handle it. The refined products are then sold to where they are used. There are such things as jobs, tax and forex. As for the gas, it is piped ashore here.
|
|
By:
There's lots of jobs in wind and solar too. Lots of jobs in supermarkets and care homes. I mean, if the only good point is more jobs then fair enough.
But I'd have thought after the last couple of years, energy independence and security would be a bit of a priority. As long as British people are happy giving away our energy resources to foreign companies to profit from then the tories will just keep doing it I suppose. Meanwhile we continue to be beholden to the whims of the Russians and Saudis. Taking back control. |

We've had oil for 50 years, where's all the wealth that comes with being an oil producing nation?
Norway shared our oil journey, gets 78p per £ of revenue, abolished income tax and set up a sovereign wealth fund. UK gets 56p per £ of oil revenue and it's citizens are burdened with the highest tax take since WW2. all our wealth is being siphoned off to tax havens. |
|
By:
Population of Norway 5 million
It’s Britain that has to produce the jobs ( and health and social care and infrastructure and schools etc ) for millions of people … and millions of people from all over the world - not comparable |

Sunak would sell his wife and children, but would
likely sell them to a tory donor, dealer who would sell them on to highest bidder. He could then rent them back at £60k an hour having them helicoptered in as required. |
|
By:
all our wealth is being siphoned off to tax havens.
Then what happens to it? Do the billionaires accumulate all this money in order to sit in their counting houses totting it up all day? |
|
By:
No. It trickles down to the rest of us.

Only the left would attempt to compare a small one trick pony like Norway with the UK.
When Norway funds almost everything from natural resources. It's noticable that Norway are not in the EU. |
|
By:
Much of our electricity and space heating are derived from natural gas. It makes more sense to pipe it in from our own wells than import LNG which generates far more CO2 per unit of useful energy as it has to be liquified and transported by sea. Better the taxes go to the exchequer than to regimes like the Qatari one. What does it matter if our crude oil is refined in Rotterdam and then sent back to us, we don't have the refinery capacity here. Much of our diesel fuel comes from Russia, perhaps the no-drilling brigade thinks that's a good idea.
|
|
By:
There's lots of jobs in wind and solar too. Lots of jobs in supermarkets and care homes. I mean, if the only good point is more jobs then fair enough.
How much foreign exchange do those activities generate? We have to buy dollars to buy in oil and if we can't generate the forex by sales then we either borrow the money or sell off assets. We can't survive by selling each other cups of latte and wiping backsides. |
|
By:
Much of "our" oil doesn't work in our refineries
so we don't refine our refineries to develop it and produce end product that would give more jobs and earn more dollars. |
|

Shell rewards shareholders with a 15% dividend increase
|
|
By:
We've just sold most oil /gas to companies
that make as much profit as they can and try not to pay tax on profits. The ministers will find way on to boards in due course where renumeration is high and actual work put in is low. Hey, but they've earned it. Even Grayling gets gravy. |
|
By:
But there's no commitment in this announcement to keep the gas and oil here. It won't make energy cheaper. It won't bring energy security into our hands.
The only thing it'll do is make a few petrochemical companies even richer than they were before. What's the point? |
|
By:
As I have already pointed out, jobs, taxes, forex. Better to use gas piped from the North sea than to import LNG by tanker.
|
|
By:
Do they buy the licences in dollars or pounds
do they pay taxes in dollars or pounds. |
|
By:
The oil companies would be happy to
rescue every profitable drop from north sea But they don't sell it to us at fixed price for benefit of all uk consumers of energy. They punt it on to whoever wants it, at best price they can, for them. They don't build refineries near where product is produced as they can sell to those that already have refineries and if uk crude is shipped half way round the world, well, that doesn't matter. |
|
By:

Anyway, three cheers for the petrochemical industry.
Hip hip. |

George Monbiot at the Guardian,'Here's the truth about Sunaks plans for the North Sea'
Some read and worth a look. A quote from him,'They(Trump,Sunak) are representatives of the dirtiest most destructive varieties of capital, the varieties engaged in a war on humanity'. Boring now, caught you all again toryfanboys, see you tomoz.. |

lapsy - makes NO difference who's in government. They are all controlled by the WEF and their cabal. Our country Ireland is one of the biggest globalist countries in the world. Not one party in Ireland is any different. SF just another puppet. Friends & family still not getting compensated with the MICA scandal

George Monbiot at The Guardian lol.
''In August 2015, Monbiot endorsed Jeremy Corbyn's campaign in the Labour Party leadership election.[50] In April 2017, he announced his intention to vote for the Labour Party in the 2017 general election.[51][52][53] In August 2021, he endorsed Tamsin Omond and Amelia Womack in the 2021 Green Party of England and Wales leadership election.[54]'' Wiki. Another left-wing privileged loon writing for the Guardian. Don't the Guardian have any normal people writing for them?. |
|
By:
The answer is no they don’t, because only left-wing loons read the Guardian.
And lefties like Monbiot satisfy their cravings for anti-capitalist tripe, and serve it up by the bucketful. |

So what. Cold kills more people than warm ever does.
How many people are going to die for your stupid ideas? |
|
By:
But these wells aren't going to make us any warmer. The oil - our oil - is going to be extracted by foreign companies and will be sold to foreign customers.

From Monbiot's article:
''While environmental scientists and activists fight for the very survival of the habitable planet'' the very survival of the habitable planet - lol. He's off his rocker. |
|
By:
So what? Are you saying Sunak is trying to keep us all warm?
|
|
By:
Sunak is being sensible - we have North Sea oil and gas resources
And we are going to use them |
|
By:
Of course if there are some countries
unlucky enough not to have such resources that’s unfortunate - for them |

From Monbiot's article: ''While environmental scientists and activists fight for the very survival of the habitable planet'' the very survival of the habitable planet - lol. He's off his rocker. .................... Many -mainly young and naive- people will believe it, especially if their teachers are on board. I gather they've changed the TV weather maps to cause extra fear and worry. |

But the issue of Climate change is not where the oil and gas comes from, it is whether or not we use any at all. Why is it seen as OK to import gas from Russia or USA and oil from Saudi when we can produce more ourselves until we can manage without any? Using imported fossil fuel is a double whammy.
|
|
By:
Indeed.
But our fuel is run on a capitalist basis. It's bought and sold on the open market. If we actually want to use our own oil and gas then we need to be the people selling it as well as buying. |
