Indeed she is already at it.

Despite her disappointing performance so far, Ms Lake has gone on a media blitz – on the one hand declaring that she is “100 per cent going to win” and on the other seeking to push conspiracies about the election.

While she seeks to undermine the election before the race is even declared, election officials are seeking to combat this by sharing information about how the process works. Ms Hobbs meanwhile is urging Arizonans not to listen to the “unhinged former television reporter”.

Trump was robbed in 2020

The reps weren’t  this time

So he and the gop allowed this cheating to go on when Trump was in power (and his admin had oversight of the elections) and under mainly gop run states but it didn't 't happen when the cheating side was in power? Think about that - it makes Trump look even more dumb that he allowed it to happen - esp as he illegally sent federal forces to influence RDS election in 2018 according to him yesterday!
RDS is in prime position now but it is very rare for those up at this stage to  maintain it to the primaries unless it is a 1 or poss 2 horse race. That is without Trump doing what  he does, just with the normal level of vitriol directed at each other that happens in primaries. I've a feeling he will regret the more magaish nonsense like the refugees (the funding  behind that is err intersting to say the least). All bets are off on releasing anything from his past - and this is in his own party!
it doesn't surprise me that nomarks from the UK whose interest in us politics begins and ends with Trump have no idea about how elections and counting is done but the so called 'Patriots' bloody well should!
Az especially used to be a a very red state, consequently the rules are all pretty much those put forward by the gop at some point in the last 50 years. Results weren't close so they were called early, now due to demographics it, like others. is a purple state so result are closer and more people vote by post now which until 2020 was mainly a gop thing.
McCarthy is praying he doesn't get over 218 as his life is going to be hell for the next 2 years at least if he does!

Marvellous stuff from the FT

Donald Trump was dealt another blow on Monday night after Republican Kari Lake lost her bid to become governor of Arizona, the latest in a series of high-profile candidates handpicked by the former president to fall short following last week’s US midterm elections.

Almost a week after the polls closed, the Associated Press projected that Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s secretary of state, would beat Lake by a razor-thin margin to become the state’s first Democratic governor in 14 years.

The result comes on the eve of Trump’s expected announcement that he is formally running for president in 2024 and amid infighting among Republicans in Washington and across the country over what direction the party should take after a string of disappointing results in the midterms.

“Democracy is worth the wait,” said Hobbs. “Thank you, Arizona. I am so honoured and so proud to be your next governor.”

A former local news anchor in Phoenix, Lake was the newest star of the Maga movement and one of Trump’s favourite candidates this cycle in part because of her media savvy and insistence that the 2020 presidential election was “****” and “stolen” from him.

Lake has not conceded the election but said on Twitter instead: “Arizonans know BS when they see it.” Since election day, Lake has accused Arizona officials of “suppressing” Republican votes.

During her campaign, Lake said she would not have certified the 2020 election as governor and advocated for ending mail-in voting, actions that would have threatened the administration of the 2024 presidential election in a clear battleground state.

Lake is far from the only election denier who lost their race in the midterms. Results in races across the country showed swing state voters overwhelmingly rejected those candidates seeking state office who denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

The call in the Arizona governor’s race came one day before Trump is widely expected to launch his 2024 White House bid, in what his advisers have described as a “special announcement” at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

At the same time, on Capitol Hill, Republican lawmakers are scrambling ahead of planned leadership elections that will determine the political futures of both Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell, and lay bare the enduring influence Trump has over many members of the party.

While Republicans appear on course to eke out a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, they failed to gain control of the Senate, falling short of the expected “red wave” that would have strengthened the party’s legislative hand and made it a thorn in the side of Joe Biden’s White House.

The results have also dented the political ambitions of McCarthy, the most senior House Republican, who until recently had been seen as a near shoo-in to become Speaker of the House, taking the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.

But McCarthy is facing pressure from rightwing members of his party, who want assurances that the California lawmaker will bend to their legislative priorities. Elections among lawmakers for House Republican leadership positions are scheduled for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Republican senators are scheduled to hold their own leadership elections on Wednesday, after they failed to win back control of the upper chamber of Congress in the midterms. Democrats officially secured another majority in the Senate at the weekend, following victories in Arizona and Nevada for incumbent Democrats Mark Kelly and Catherine Cortez Masto, respectively.

Whether the Democrats control an evenly divided chamber or have a 51-49 majority will be determined next month in a run-off election in Georgia between incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker.

McConnell, the longtime Republican leader in the Senate, has so far been unchallenged to lead his party in the upper chamber. But several Republican senators have suggested delaying the leadership vote in the upper chamber until after the Georgia run-off, raising speculation that McConnell could face a challenge from a lawmaker such as Rick Scott, the Florida senator who led the Republicans’ midterm campaign efforts and has locked horns with McConnell in recent months.

Trump, who is looking to reclaim the political spotlight even after several of his handpicked candidates lost in the midterms, has called for Scott to replace McConnell, who previously raised questions about the “quality” of Trump’s endorsements.

Posting on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump said the midterm results were “Mitch McConnell’s fault”, adding: “He blew the midterms, and everyone despises him.”

GOP’s Lisa Murkowski wins reelection in Alaska Senate race

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski has won reelection, defeating Donald Trump-endorsed GOP rival Kelly Tshibaka.

Murkowski beat Tshibaka in the Nov. 8 ranked choice election. The results were announced Wednesday, when elections officials tabulated the ranked choice results after neither candidate won more than 50% of first-choice votes. Murkowski wound up with 54% of the vote after ranked choice voting, picking up a majority of the votes cast for Democrat Pat Chesbro after she was eliminated.

“I am honored that Alaskans — of all regions, backgrounds and party affiliations — have once again granted me their confidence to continue working with them and on their behalf in the U.S. Senate,” Murkowski said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing the important work ahead of us.”

Tshibaka in a statement posted on her website congratulated Murkowski but took fault with ranked choice voting.

“The new election system has been frustrating to many Alaskans, because it was indisputably designed as an incumbent-protection program, and it clearly worked as intended,” she said.

The race also included Republican Buzz Kelley, who suspended his campaign after the August primary and endorsed Tshibaka.

Murkowski was the only Senate Republican who voted to convict Trump at his impeachment trial last year who was on the ballot this year. Trump was not convicted. But her vote was a sore point for the former president, who vowed to campaign against her.

Arizona certifies 2022 election despite GOP complaints

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona’s top officials certified the midterm election results Monday, formalizing victories for Democrats over Republicans who falsely claimed the 2020 election was ****.

The certification opens a five-day window for formal election challenges. Republican Kari Lake, who lost the race for governor, is expected to file a lawsuit after weeks of criticizing the administration of the election.

Election results have largely been certified without issue around the country, but Arizona was an exception. Several Republican-controlled counties delayed their certification despite no evidence of problems with the vote count. Cochise County in southeastern Arizona blew past the deadline last week, forcing a judge to intervene on Friday and order the county supervisors to certify the election by the end of the day.

“Arizona had a successful election,” Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, said before signing the certification. “But too often throughout the process, powerful voices proliferated misinformation that threatened to disenfranchise voters.”

The statewide certification, known as a canvass, was signed by Hobbs, Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, Republican Attorney General Mark Brnovich and Chief Justice Robert Brutinel, a Ducey appointee.

Kari Lake challenges her defeat in Arizona governor’s race

PHOENIX (AP) — Kari Lake, the Republican defeated in Arizona governor’s race, is formally challenging her loss to Democrat Katie Hobbs, asking a court to throw out certified election results from the state’s most populous county and either declare her the winner or rerun the governor’s election in that county.

The lawsuit filed late Friday by Lake centers on long lines and other difficulties that people experienced while voting on Election Day in Maricopa County. The challenge filed in Maricopa County Superior Court also alleges hundreds of thousands of ballots were illegally cast, but there’s no evidence that’s true.

Lake has refused to acknowledge that she lost to Hobbs by more than 17,000 votes.

Funny, given that some Republican guy from Arizona already announced pre-election that the go-to move would be to try and just declare the votes they didn't like as non-counting.

"The election is now 'certified' by Katie Hobbs & I have a strict timeline before I can file my lawsuits," he tweeted. "We are $85k short of what I need to pay for lawyers. Please chip in $5, $10, $15 or more right now to help me get lawyers on retainer."

NY Rep.-elect Santos investigated for lying about his past

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Rep.-elect George Santos of New York was under investigation by Long Island prosecutors on Wednesday, after revelations surfaced that the now-embattled Republican lied about his heritage, education and professional pedigree as he campaigned for office.

Despite intensifying doubt about his fitness to hold federal office, Santos has shown no signs of stepping aside — even as he publicly admitted to a long list of lies.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly, a Republican, said the fabrications and inconsistencies were “nothing short of stunning.”

“The residents of Nassau County and other parts of the third district must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress,” she said. “If a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”

Santos’ campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Democrat wins Arizona attorney general race after recount

PHOENIX (AP) — A recount of votes has confirmed Democrat Kris Mayes narrowly defeated Republican Abraham Hamadeh in the Arizona attorney general’s race, one of the closest elections in state history.

The highly anticipated results announced Thursday in Maricopa County Superior Court are among the last in the country to come out of November’s election and solidified another victory for Democrats who shunned election fraud conspiracies in what used to be a solidly Republican state.

With Hamadeh’s defeat, Republicans running statewide in battleground states who spread former President Donald Trump’s false claim that the 2020 election was stolen have all lost their races.
